This exact piece realized $388.38 on 11/23/2008, during a weekly Heritage Comics Auction. I went so far as to bid $300 ($358.50 w/Buyer's Premium). I was surprised and saddened by the final price. Another 9.8 copy was sold on Heritage on 02/19/2009, for $215.10. The second copy had a cover strike that was slightly off, I passed on bidding. With the only two existing 9.8 copies sold off life went on.

Two years later this piece became a part of the ComicLink July 2010 Focused Auction. The census still only listed 2 copies in 9.8 grade, I knew right away this was the piece that sold for so much in 2008. I figured the final price would be just as much if not more, I did not get my hopes up. I almost forgot about it altogether and logged on within 20 minutes of closing. The price was nowhere near what I was expecting, I placed a low bid, figuring I would be sniped in the last few seconds. The timer finally ran out and the final price came to $113, it took me a moment to process this.

I still can’t believe my luck, I have several other pieces with similar stories, and because of experiences like this I still treasure these books several years later. The book itself is gorgeous in appearance, thanks to the yellow background and high cover gloss; the original owner clearly had a sharp eye and really knew how to take care of comic books. I also love this piece for the cover art and time period that it was published, far more important than auction prices or census numbers.
