Owner's Description
Tegra Jungle Empress #1 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on page 31. Wertham considered jungle comics to be a special type of crime comic. On page 31, he describes how jungle comics specialize in “torture, bloodshed and lust in an exotic setting.” He goes on to describe the particulars of jungle comics including one that contained details such as “one girl squirting fiery radium dust on the protruding breasts of another girl (“I think I’ve discovered your Achilles’ heel, chum!”); white men banging natives around; a close-up view of the branded breast of a girl; a girl about to be blinded.”
In this description, Wertham is clearly referring to Tegra Jungle Empress #1 as the first story involves Tegra battling Zanto Queen of Saturn and contains a panel with the radium dust scene. In addition to this panel, a Blue Beetle story in this same comic contains panels that tie back to Wertham’s reference of a close-up view of branded breast and a girl about to be blinded. Given the above choices, I’ve decided to include a scan of the radium dust page as you can’t go wrong showing a story that contains irradiated protruding breasts.
