At 55 pages and almost just as many guest artists contributing, this 800th anniversary issues takes a sentimental look at the influence of Superman on ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Drew Struzan's painted cover pays tribute to a familiar and classic cover, Alex Ross does the same for the first page. Writer Joe Kelley revisits an origin retold many times in a new way, focusing on the early days of Clark Kent's arrival in Metropolis, where he has yet to find the confidence within himself to deal with his powers and life in the big city. Throughout the issue are several 2-3 page spreads from other artist and writers, focusing on the impact of Superman's example on others, from a police officer wounded in the line of duty, to an inner city child who was inspired to read by seeing Superman comic strips.
I waited several years for a 9.8 copy of this double-sized anniversary issue to appear, to go with my other Action Comics anniversary issues – until February 2012, 19 copies were listed in 9.6, and zero in 9.8 in the CGC census.
Reprinted in Action Comics: 80 Years of Superman the Deluxe Edition by Various, 2018.
