Owner's Description
Justice Traps the Guilty #13 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) on pages 110-111. These pages are a part of chapter IV entitled “The Wrong Twist”. In this chapter, Wertham describes how children are negatively affected by the repeated depictions of violence and brutal behavior. He uses a remark from a character in a story (Slot Machine Payoff) contained in Justice Traps the Guilty #13 to reinforce his analysis that repeated exposure to brutal behavior can desensitize children to the harmful effects of violence. He describes Justice Traps the Guilty #13 as follows:In a comic “Authorized by the Association of Comics Magazine Publishers” this lesson is driven home. A young girl is being initiated as a confederate into the slot-machine protection racket. She sees how her friend beats up an old man, knocks off his glasses, etc. At first she does not like it. But later, after she had seen such brutal treatment repeated as routine in the racket, she says: “One gets accustomed to brutality after a while!” That is one instance there I agree with a comic-book character.I have included a scan of the page from Justice Traps the Guilty #13, where Cherry Harrison (the young girl from Wertham’s quote) makes her statement about becoming accustomed to brutality. As to not leave you hanging, the story ends with Cherry turning on her mobster husband Walt when she learns of his plan to extend the slot machine racket to include children.
