This is one of my CGC offenses, or CGC dumb-cisions. It was part of the first and only two batches of comics I ever had CGC'd, which was around 2002. Why I CGC'd it still stumps--and haunts-- me to this day.
I must've bought this comic raw on eBay for $.99. The seller must've been willing to lose money just to get rid of it. The film adaptation of THE MASK was a hit in Jim Carrey's heyday in 1995, and I must've thought the market for this book was still glowing hot 7 years later. Surely, I thought, the seller didn't know the treasure he was essentially giving away. I was so proud of myself for this steal--perhaps even a felony!--when it arrived in the mail.
When it came time to choose what I wanted to CGC, I must've picked this book because I thought it was a rarity, having never actually seen one in a comic shop, or having stepped into one in the 5 years prior. In 2002, CGC comics were a ludicrous market--this Dark Horse Presents #11--the second appearance of The Masque (The Mask)--surely would've been the equivalent to the second appearance of Superman. I made plans to fund next semester's graduate tuition with this sale. I lost sleep over what the taxes on this would look like.
I remember my reaction when it arrived in the mail graded: 8.0? VF? It showed my ignorance of what a raw, CGC-worthy comic should look like. It took me a long time afterward to even pick out the obvious flaws on the book. And to be frank, I was a little upset that the note on the label didn't indicate that this was the 2nd appearance of The Mask. (Have a little courtesy, CGC note takers. Really.) I don't remember if I ever put the book up for auction. If I did, it obviously didn't sell. If I didn't try to auction it, it was probably because I was too embarrassed.
And here I am displaying my shame. To this day, over 10 years later, it is still the only copy on the census. For what it's worth, the virtue of this comic is that it is the only DHP that featured The Masque on the cover during its year-long run.
