Inside The Comic
Twenty two pages of story, two pages of letters, five pages of Riblet, two pages of ads and a pin-up. The inside front cover has a drawing of Smiley and Bartleby from page 3 with the black & white “coloring” reversed. The brief prologue is on the top left and the credits are as follows: Written and Drawn by Jeff Smith, Cover Color by Elizabeth Lewis, Production Design by Karen Root. For Cartoon Books: Vijaya Iyer as President, Lopa Mukherjee for Marketing and Public Relations, and Kathleen Glosan as Administrative Assistant. The back cover has a panel from page 3 showing Fone Bone nervously mentioning Rock Jaw’s talk of war to his animal friends.
Bone-a-Fides
The Bone-a-Fides are mostly effusive praise for #30, 31, and Riblet. One fan asks if Jeff would come to the UK at some point but he said he was very busy with Trilogy Tour II in the states during the summer of ‘98. He would keep it in mind for the future though. Another fan mentions that Jeff was quoted to say that Bone would end at #75 and wanted to know if any prequels were planned. Jeff replied that #32 was roughly halfway through and that a drawing of Rose (aka a young Gran’ma Ben) was included in the Trilogy Tour II artwork. Her story will become a fully painted series by the great Charles Vess (color images of the artwork were on the website at the time).
Ads
One of the ad pages is for a comic named Silly Daddy #18 by Joe Chiappetta and the other was for Trilogy Tour II (both the Tour book and the actual Tour). The final page had a pin-up by Derek which featured Roque Ja protecting Fone Bone on a cliff with the stupid, stupid rat creatures barely hanging on. His signature included the note “Thanks Jeff and Vijaya!” The inside back cover had an ad for the Volume 5 Hardcover: Rock Jaw, Master of the Eastern Border with the question “What do you do with a 900 lb cat?” at the top.

Bone Coda
For the 25th anniversary of Bone #1’s publication in 1991, Jeff and the CB crew produced this new chapter with a new 36-page story of the Bone cousins & Bartleby, a new essay by Jeff, and a reprint of A Bone Companion by Stephen Weiner. The story itself takes place right after Bone #55 and features a small part of their road trip towards Boneville. The book debuted at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con where Cartoon Books sold 500 signed & numbered editions with a bookplate within. I had a Signature Series facilitator (Doug Scott) buy me a couple copies which I held in a short box waiting for a signing.
For the first time in my collecting journey, an official Jeff Smith appearance was scheduled to occur within three hours of my location…at the 2023 Bedrock City Comic-Con in Houston, TX. I blocked off my schedule and started to make arrangements when the unthinkable happened…Jeff had a heart attack. As we all know, he thankfully ended up okay and eventually rescheduled his appearance for the following year. I remade all the arrangements and got to meet him for the first time on both days of the Con. This was the second book he signed for me and included a Fone Bone head sketch (other book is described in Bone #54). He is truly an incredibly nice guy and I’m very glad to have met him after all these decades.
The slab has a yellow/black label because of the verified bookplate signature on the interior. The sig & sketch on the cover were witnessed by a helper of the facilitator Dork Buzz. Thank you for helping me out gentlemen!
