Owner's Description

Strange Worlds #2 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on page 112. In this section of the SOTI Wertham describes the negative effects of excessive violence in comic books. He is particularly critical of stories that contain injury-to-eye panels. He specifically states that the depiction of injury-to-eye violence in comic books encourages juveniles to deliberately “harm the eyes of other children”. For proof of this assertion, he provides an anecdotal story of asking juveniles who have fashioned homemade zip guns “what harm they can do with so little power” and they reply: “You shoot in the eye. Then it works”.

He goes on to narrate several examples of injury-to-eye stories including one from Strange Worlds #2. The example he cites from Strange Worlds #2 is from a storyline entitled: “Crom the Barbarian and the Giant from Beyond”. In this story, Crom, the main character, battles a blood thirsty giant named Belthar. Belthar appears unstoppable until Crom blinds him with a slash of his sword. It is this blinding panel that Wertham references on page 112 using the following description: “One comic shows a man slashing another man across the eyeballs with a sword. The victim: MY EYES! I cannot see!” I have included scan of the injury-to-eye panel that Wertham cites from Strange Worlds #2.
