Owner's Description

The Set: This book was signed by Sienkiewicz on 3/23/14.

The Book: This is my one and only original owner Sienkiewicz book to make the cut, and it came in at 9.8! Like all of my OO books, this book has seen many miles, moved many times, and has been transferred from many boxes in its 26 year journey from me buying it off the rack to it reaching 9.8 status!

The Cover: I'm partial to this cover. Who am I kidding? I'm partial to all the Sienkiewicz covers. The man is a genius. I admired them as a youth. I admire them even more as an adult. They are the very definition of high art. His use of mixed media- colored pencil, ink, paints (I'm not sure if they are oils or acrylics) and chalks adds to each mask- a study in contrasts of tone, color, and expression.

His signature placement and expression are perfect. I could not ask for a better presented book.

The Original Art: I will likely never own an original Kojima sketch. (The original pages to Lone Wolf and Cub are out of the question- they are under lock and key from the publisher, if I'm not mistaken) I will also never likely own an original Frank Miller cover, for the same financial reasons. I HAVE seen affordable Sienkiewicz LWC OO, so maybe one day that will happen. Imagine my joy and surprise then, when I saw this piece for sale at a reasonable price.

This OA piece is a cover preliminary. It is done in pencil and ink. It contains pen, marker and brush work. He also uses multiple penciling techniques to achieve his intended result. In short, this sketch is a beautiful work in its own right. Note the differences between the original and the finished cover. Note in particular, the dramatic differences in the Daigoro's. The note from Bill to the First Editor reads, "Daigoro's head bottom left will be looking at masks--(or I may do head shot of D. full face, looking very stern or some such thing-- as a sort of "mask")

Update: I now own a piece of original art by Goseki Kojima! Please check out the second pic under the number one, fourth print slot!
