Owner's Description

Stories by Famous Authors Illustrated #6 is referenced in “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) on pages 22 and 143. On page 22, the story telling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, as depicted in Stories by Famous Authors Illustrated #6, is described as a crime comic. Fredric Wertham, the author of the SOTI, discusses how the first page of the comic describes the story of Macbeth as being based on “true accounts” (a crime comic formula) and containing provocative word balloons such as “Smear the sleeping servants with BLOOD!” From Wertham’s perspective, this introductory page of the comic is designed to excite children with violence and give the story of Macbeth “the appeal of a crime comic book.”

On page 143, Wertham describes comic books based on classics or famous authors as showing a disregard for both literature and children. He takes issue with the telling of classic or famous stories in comic book form because they emphasize and glorify the violent aspects of these stories and corrupt both the original author (Shakespeare in the case of Famous Authors Illustrated #6) and the child reading the story. In general, Wertham found no redeeming value for children to read famous or classic stories told in comic book form as they were nothing more than crime comics in disguise. In addition to the cover scan, I have included a scan of the title page that Wertham referenced.
