9 page Captain Marvel
"Bill Batson, School Editor"
(Script) Bill Woolfolk

Mr. Morris enters Billy's office at WHIZ but Billy needs to rush out to get to school. (who knew Billy had an office? who knew Billy went to school?) It's a night class and all the other students appear to be adults. Billy arrives to discover he's been elected editor of the school newspaper. Of an night school? The next day the dean of the school talks to Billy's teacher and sort of accuses him of stealing $1000 from the school. He fires the teacher who then threatens the Dean. It's a weird turn because up to that point the teacher seemed very kindly. A janitor overhears the threat.

Later Billy walks into the Dean's office only to find him dead from a knife in the back. The janitor tells him that he overheard Billy's teacher, Mr. Gilroy issue a threat so Billy rushes off to find him while apparently leaving Dean Martin (yes, that's his name) body lying in his office. Apparently Mr. Gilroy left in a hurry to catch a plane ride. Cap catches up to the plane in mid air and actually opens the door and flies Mr. Gilroy back as Billy's teacher professes his innocence. In an uncharacteristically cold move declares the death of Dean Martin as 'an interesting story for the school paper' and refers to the day as 'exciting'.

Later, Billy decides he WON'T print the story believing in Mr. Gilroy's innocence. The newspaper staff is angry but Billy decides to do some sleuthing to prove his teachers innocence. The janitor is sticking to his story but Billy finds out from the school treasurer that $5000 was stolen from Dean Martin's safe (school treasurer??). Billy gets a frosty reception from the staff of the school newspaper when the headlines of other papers announce the death of Dean Martin while the school newspaper published an essay by Billy.

Later, Billy has an epiphany and flies back to the school as Capt, Marvel, He finds the janitor hiding money in the furnace and punches him in the jaw, The janitor smacks a shovel over Cap's head to no effect. Mr. Gilroy is declalred
and Billy wins a journalism award, ironically for his essay.

"The Mississippi Steamboat Race"
(Pencils/Inks) Pete Costanza

Billy decides to do an article on the Mary Ann, the oldest operating river boat but finds its condition to be terrible. Billy literally smashes through the floorboards and has to transform to Capt. Marvel to protect himself. A fellow named Elmer Poodle comes aboard with the sheriff in order to condemn the boat (and well they should) but Captain Dodd defends his boat. They decide to have a race to determine if the Mary Ann will be demolished (this is a classic story line from the 1940's). Cap overhears Poodle and the other man talking and it turns out the plan always was to trick Dodd into a race and the other man wasn't even a cop.

Billy tells him the truth but Dodd is still intent on winning the race. Later, BIlly spots one of Dodd's crew members helping Poodle aboard but is clunked on the head before he can do anything. The two take a gagged Billy to the engine room and sabotage the engine leaving Billy to be blown apart when the damaged engines explode. Dodd's traitorous crew member stokes the engine and then heads out. Predictably, Billy manages to catch his gag on a loose board and remove it allowing him to transform. Capt. Marvel holds the engine until the pressure subsides.

Cap goes on deck to find the Mary Ann way behind in the race. To get them back in the race Cap swims in the river pulling the boat with a tow rope. I know that Poodle cheated but at this point the whole race seems to have gone up in the air as Cap just uses his powers to win the race. After the race Captain Dodd pulls the paddle boat onto land and offers tours of the 'oldest paddle wheel on the river'. So the results of the race are essentially irrelevant.

7 page Captain Marvel
"The Yeast Menace"
(Script) Otto Binder
(Pencils/Ink): Pete Costanza

Billy Batson is in his basement playing with his chemistry set when he gets an unexpected delivery from the Acme Chemical Company, an "enzyme Y". Turns out the delivery was intended for a William Watson who lives around the corner. When Mr. Watson receives the enzyme he uses it to activate a new kind of yeast. Billy leaves to go home but hears cries for help and transforms.and discovers the yeast is growing out of control. The yeast actually begins to threaten the entire city so Capt. Marvel takes Watson to Billy's chemical set while Cap heads around town trying to rescue people. Finally he transforms back to Billy and broadcasts and urgent plea for people to flee the city before being buried neck deep in yeast.

Cap heads back to Mr. Watson who's created a complex formula to stop the yeast but Marvel is able to use his super brain to simplify the formula. Turns out the formula is simply water so Cap checks with the weather bureau and finds out it will rain in an hour. Until then he simply stands around while citizens are running in fear Turns out the weatherman was wrong and Cap has to fly up and seed another cloud with his magical lightning (I don't think it works that way). The city is saved and Mr. Watson gets 50K for his invention. The End.

"The Dream Transmitter"
(Script) Otto Binder
(Pencils/Inks) Pete Costanza

A boy named Danny buys some skates and gets a free whistle as well as five more whistles for his friends from a shop owner named Mr. Slumboor. It turns out Slumboor is a crook and he has a device to send dreams. A red knight emerges from his dream transmitter and encourages Danny to follow him to a treasure. He convinces Danny to pick up a "talisman" but it's actually a vial of nitro glycerin. The knight convinces Danny to use the explosive to blow open a bank safe and the sound wakes Billy Batson. He arrives as Capt. Marvel but is surprised to see a member of the Capt. Marvel club behind the theft. The cash has already been taken by Slumboor.

Cap quickly determines that someone is controller dreams and decide to investigate Slumboor only because they're investigating everyone. They find Slumboor with the money but he pulls a lever trapping the kids in the basement. The boys uses there whistles to send out a coded message that Billy hears. He transforms and rescues the boys but Slumboor escapes.

Later, Slumboor creates a dream version of Capt. Marvel to visit all the boys and lead them to their deaths including Billy however it occurs to the half memorized Billy that this Marvel can't be real. He wakes the boys up and captures Slumboor. Problem solved.
