City story: Oklahoma City, OK

Outside of WHIZ a clown is performing a dangerous stunt. Capt. Marvel saves his life but it turns out he did the stunt just to meet Cap. The clown is Uncle Leo from WKY in Oklahoma City. I did some research and Uncle Leo was an actual person. Leo wants Cap to capture a gorilla named Colossus who escaped from the OKC zoo. Meanwhile the ape wanders into a residential home and starts to read the morning paper but flees when a woman screams. Cap travels around OKC but can't find Colossus who is up to hi-jinx at a beauty parlor. Cap gets a tip to Colossus's location but by the time he arrives the ape is gone. He finally spots the ape (who is now wearing read long johns) but the cops mistake the two and shoot Cap in the rear end and capture him in a net. Later, a woman mistakes the ape for Cap and he scoops her up in his arms and climbs up an oil derrick. Cap pushes a cloud over top Colossus, pummels the poor ape and returns him to the zoo.

Billy Batson is covering the Wimpleton Sports Events for WHIZ. The Blue Bloods have won six years straight but now have to face the tough Hoy Palloys. It's clear both teams are composed of snobs but the Blue Bloods are attempting to cheat to win to help pay some gambling debts. The start jumping on the ceiling of the sleeping Hoy Palloys literally bringing the ceiling down but Capt. Marvel flies up and decks the two members of the Blue Bloods. The two escape in the dark but Cap gets a good enough of a look to suspect the Blue Bloods of cheating. The Hoy Palloys are too injured by the collapsing ceiling to continue the competition so Capt. Marvel offers to take their place.

The first competition is golf but despite having no experience with the game Cap immediately gets a hole in one and finishes with 18 holes in one. Next is tennis where Cap blanks his opponent. In archery Cap does the old Robin Hood splitting the arrow trick. In trap shooting he nails every target and in bowling scores a 300. The final event is an auto race but the Blue Bloods damaged it so Capt. Marvel simply pushes it over the finish line. The Blue Bloods are banished for cheating and Cap gives the trophy to the Hoy Palloys who he claims would have won had they not been sabotaged.

"The Jealous Magician"
(Pencils/Inks) C.C. Beck

Capt. Marvel is putting on a show at a theater to sell war bonds but a magician across the street in a rival theater is angry because he's getting no business so he decides to prove Marvel is a fraud. He walks on stage during Cap's act and levels a gun at him but when he fires the bullets predictably have no effect. The magician then appears to pull a bullet proof vest from under Cap's costume. The crowd starts to turn on our hero so the magician loudly suggest that Cap prove himself by flying, However, the magician points out to Marvel that he has tied a string to him that is attached to a barrel of dynamite set to explode. He's unable to fly lest he blow up the theater but the crowd becomes more convinced he's a fraud. Cap tries to explain the situation but the magician pulls the string to no effect. Cap decides to change back to Billy to beat the magician up but gets grabbed up by the magicians assistant. Apparently everyone in the crowd knows the Billy and Capt Marvel are the same and start throwing objects at the villain. The magician tries to duplicate the trick by transforming his large assistant into a smaller version and the fickle crowd eats it up (it was already shown the magician has two assistants, a large one and a smaller one). Billy rushes under the stage finding the trap door the magician used for the trick but gets knocked out. Meanwhile, the magician has accidentally started a fire on stage. The magician dives down the trap door and the audience clears out in a panic. The magician gets caught in the door as the stage crew tries to put out the fire. Billy wakes and transforms and urges the audience to calm and return to their seats. Cap puts out the fire and forces the magician to admit that Cap is not a fake.
