Jeff Smith story, cover, and art. Wraparound cover.
Synopsis
Bartleby, the rat creature cub, returns to save the party from the clutches of The Hooded One, but can they successfully navigate through the ghost circles with a pack of rat creatures on their tail? This image became the cover for the original black & white printing of the Ghost Circles TPB.
The Slab
Highest grade for Signature Series! Purchased the book from Grails as a CGC 9.8 via eBay (originally from the rolo40 collection). Signed by Jeff at the 2014 Heroes Con with help from facilitator dscott. Graded by CGC on June 20, 2014.
Inside The Comic
Twenty two pages of story, two pages of letters, and eight pages of ads. The inside front cover has a drawing of Smiley from page 2 with the black & white “coloring” reversed. The brief prologue is on the top left and the credits are as follows: Written and Drawn by Jeff Smith, Cover Color by Elizabeth Lewis. For Cartoon Books: Vijaya Iyer as President, Kathleen Glosan as Production Manager, Steve Hamaker as Product Designer and Kevin Spain for Shipping and Archiving. The back cover is just a continuation of the art from the front. It’s the only time that Bone had a gatefold cover.
Bone-a-Fides
The letters are mostly positive this time around. The one and only Olav Beemer chimed in again and gave a mostly positive review of #39, especially with all the new questions and riddles it has inspired. He admitted that not much has happened with the main storyline in the last two issues but he’s still anxiously awaiting all the answers.
A letter writer from Cardiff, Land of the Red Dragon, says he binged the entire storyline through #39 in a week and can’t believe he has to wait months for the next issue. He did mention reading Rose #1 though, as did another fan named Jamaica who was intrigued by the “crazy old cow woman as a young girl”. A 4 year-old named Molly (who had her mother write for her since she can’t spell yet) said that she loves her Bone lunch box and that no one else has one at her school. She also likes Akiko and Castle Waiting which her dad happily reads to her.
Ads
The first ad is for the Phoney Bone statue which premiered in #39. The 12” tall Kingdok figure got a two page spread highlighting the removable arm & tongue, the display base, and its scale with the other action figures (truly monstrous). The third ad shows the rest of the regular figures from Series 2 and is a reprint from the last issue. The fourth shows Steve Conley’s Astounding Space Thrills comic with upcoming covers from Dave Gibbons and Jeff Smith. The fifth has another two page spread but for Rose #2 shipping in March 2001. It illustrates Rose in the clutches of Balsaad on one page and Rose with her dogs, Euclid and Cleo, on the other. The Glow-in-the-Dark Hooded One figure is featured in the final ad.
The inside back cover has a shadowed Fone Bone walking up a mountain with the sun peering in the background. The text above reveals “In 2001 you’ll see Bone in a whole new light…” A small 10th Anniversary logo is on the bottom of the page and I shouldn’t forget to say that everything here is in color *nudge, nudge*.

Preview Exclusive Glow-in-the-Dark Hooded One Action Figure
Let's celebrate this figure’s second ad in the pages of Bone! It’s an extremely well-produced example from the Bone line which, of course, features Briar’s glow-in-the-dark skin. She comes with a scythe, four locusts, and a mask of Fone Bone if you ever wanted to recreate Thorn’s dream from #12! It’s also packaged with a mini-comic that I have yet to read. One of these days…
