Owner's Description

Why Big Chief Wahoo. The cover reminds me of a comic strip I read as a kid...Gasoline Alley... the eyes are so reminiscent of that series. Well, that and Little Orphan Annie. This is almost my oldest Comic Book... or maybe tied with it.

As I am trying to find out more about Big Chief Wahoo I am amazed at the complexity of this strip, not to mention the longevity. And here I thought SuperMan and Batman had a long run. Wahoo was created in 1936. Issue one of Big Chief Wahoo was published in July of 1942 but was eventually changed to Big Chief Wahoo and Steve Roper. Then in 1947 pushed out the main character of the title changing it to Steve Roper. Wahoo was created by Allen Saunders and Elmer Woggon. People might know Bill Woggon a little bit more. After Bill helped his older brother Elmer with being a letter for Big Chief Wahoo as well drawing the newspaper strip he went on to create Katy Keene (1945).

It's also been discussed that the Indians previous Mascot Chief Wahoo was indeed based off of Big Chief Wahoo. A mascot that began in 1947.

Artist: Elmer Woggon (?)
Writer: Allen Saunders
