Owner's Description
Interesting cover that emphasizes the difference between the movie Aquaman and the SA Aquaman of this collection, as Aquaman in Issue #44 was much more of a water creature than in the DC Universe of movies. The facial expressions in many of these covers are also different from any SA superhero titles.
The book itself continues the search for Mera, as Aquaman is now, searching for Mera's abductors on dry land and stumbles onto the aftermath of a gangland killing before accidentally knocking himself out. The triggerman reports to his boss, who believes (mistakenly) that the victim told Aquaman secret information before dying. Thus, the gang-boss puts out a contract with all the members of his syndicate for Aquaman's death. Aquaman revives in the care of the woman into whose apartment he had inadvertently broken, and sends her to the police with the report of the murder. Then he stumbles into the street, where he is soon beset by assassins seeking his life.
After a tough battle, Aquaman returns to the seas, intending to resume his quest for Mera again. But he finally opts to clear up the case into which he has stumbled first, and returns to dry land. However, the girl has been seen by a stool pigeon passing Aquaman's note to the police, and she is soon captured and held as bait for Aquaman. Meanwhile, Aqualad, in the realm of the Elfdurans, encounters the Bugala for the first time.
Our WP 9.8 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on E-Bay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.
Our book is currently tied with two other books for highest graded. We acquired the book in a swap of our 9.6 and cash in a private transaction in May 2023.
