Congratulations to the Winners of our Fourth Annual Comics Registry Awards!

We would like to thank all of the participants in the CGC Registry and congratulate everyone on their individual accomplishments in every set.

The CGC Registry has grown to over 19,000 registered sets with no sign of slowing down. We continue to receive new set type requests each day and we are thrilled to watch the registry evolve as we work through those requests.

Our Mission this year was to choose three sets each in five competitive categories, Best Golden Age, Best Silver Age, Best Bronze Age, Best Modern Age and Best Presented. Additionally we had the task of choosing one winner for Best Magazine set, three outstanding message board contributors and just one registry participant for Overall Achievement in Comics Collecting.

Our team of judges reviewed all of the top sets across every category in the Comics Registry and after much deliberation, selected the following winners. Congratulations to all!

CGC 2009 Award for Achievement in Comics Collecting

It is no surprise that the winner of the CGC 2009 Award for Achievement in Comics Collecting is Bullet123! Third in total registry points, fifth in total comic count, Bullet123’s remarkable collection sports an impressive twenty-four #1 ranked sets out of his thirty total sets. Only six of his sets are not the top ranked, but out of those six his lowest set is ranked #4! Bullet123’s Best Bats, Bullets FC’s (an impressive 693 books), Bullets Dots & Bullets Teen Titans are just some of the incredible highlights from his #1 ranked sets. Best Golden Age Sets

starman221 HOLY MOLEY STARMAN !! Captain Marvel Adventures (1941) This is a solid “Big Red Cheese” set that spans the grading gauntlet from 3.0 to 9.4! Half this set is complete and only missing 2 issues out of the first 25. Many of these books in this set are 3rd or 4th highest census copies. A marvelous showing for a deceivingly difficult set.

shrunkenhead The VF(ish) collection All Star Comics #1-#57 (1940) A true collector's set based on difficult but attainable goals that will make for a great collection once complete. With the Edgar Church copy of All Star #33 as a center piece, this set is respectable and worth keeping an eye on!

Hank Pym Haunt of Fear Haunt of Fear (1950) Trying to put a high grade set together is no easy task, but trying for the Gaines File Copy set is even harder! The lowest grade in this set so far is a 9.6! These are hauntingly stunning books.

Best Silver Age Sets

Doc Ock Spidey # 1 – 100 Amazing Spider-Man #1-#100 The Set Type (Amazing Spider-Man #1-#100) could be considered one of the most competitive in the Registry. Since 2007, Doc Ock has been building and adding to what has become the leading set out of 194 others in this Set Type! An amazing accomplishment by itself, but even more impressive are the AF #15 in 9.4, the ASM #14 in 9.6 or how about the ASM #73 in 9.9! This complete 101 book set deserves the highest rank; it is truly amazing.

Ghost Town Those Merry Mutants X-Men #1-#66 Out of 66 books in this set, only 10 are 9.4 and the remaining 56 books are 9.6, including the X-Men #1. You might expect a set with grades like these to have numerous Pedigree books in it; however this set is put together with only 8. This is a very polished and impressive set.

Korvac Saga Astonishingly Fun to Collect Tales to Astonish #27 & #35-#101 This set began back in 2005 and with some new additions in the latter part of 2008; this set has steadily grown into the #1 Set in this Set Type. This is a set about perseverance and enjoying what you collect!

Best Bronze Age Sets

kc120us Casey's Maximum Mutants X-Men (Complete Including Variants) Amazing complete Bronze Age run, mostly 9.6 & higher, with few earlier 9.4's. Images only missing on a few, with descriptions of each as well. All ages together = 551 books! Impressive!

cheetah Most Mighty! Avengers #1-#503 Complete high grade Bronze Age run of Avengers, with few below 9.6 - need we say more about this monstrous set of over 500 high grade books?

San Onofre Collection Kite Fun Books Kite Fun Books?!? WOW! Stunning set with its informative descriptions, this well presented high grade collection of an often overlooked series of historical books is quite a sight.

Best Modern Age Sets

Senator Senator's Set: New Teen Titans (1980) New Teen Titans (1980) The Senator has won our vote. He put together a fantastic set of the New Teen Titans with full descriptions and images for each one. Every single copy is graded a 9.8 including a D.C. Comics Presents #26 signed by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Also, he has accomplished all of this since the beginning of this year. All Senators should be this diligent.

canickus Canickus Marvel 30 Cent Price Variants Marvel 30 Cent Price Variants Canickus assembled an impressive collection of 30 cent price variants. What is most amazing is how so many of them are in such high grade. This is certainly no easy task. With only a few exceptions most his books are in the near-mint range. This is one set that should serve as an example to anyone looking to start a price variant collection.

HiTMAN1099 HiTMAN's Complete Set Amazing Spider-Man #201-#300 Hitman has a lot of spectacular collections on the registry. However it is this complete set of Amazing Spider-Man #201-300 that caught our attention. Every book is graded 9.8 and a few are actually 9.9. This is some impressive work and we look forward to seeing what he has for us next year.

Best Presented Sets

Silver The Smallville gang! Superboy This set is exactly what we look for in the well presented category. It has a general set description that tells us how and why this collector started this run. The introduction compels us to go on and read about this developing set. The individual book descriptions offer a little bit of everything from original descriptions of the issues to how the items were acquired. Of course there are images for every book registered in this set. This was an easy choice for us.

Best2u The LL&P Collection – Star Trek Star Trek (1967) Funny and interesting comments to go along with every book registered in this set. Very simply, this set is a standout. We kept coming back to it over and over during the judging process.

Brandon Shepherd Man Of Action Action Comics (Complete) One of the qualities that factors into the judging for this category is the participant’s ability to share their set in a unique and personal way. The comments in this set allow us a window into the mind of this collector where we can understand the excitement in acquiring some of these issues.

Best Magazine Set

Mark Sielski The Mark Sielski FM Collection Famous Monsters of Filmland A monstrous set that is complete up to #191 and is missing only the 1977 Yearbook. The lowest grade in this collection is an 8.0 and after #24 the lowest grade is 9.2! A beautiful set that is quite an undertaking to put together!
