Set Description:

Though I’ve never been a big collector of Spider-Man comics, the “Maximum Carnage” 14 part series was one of those runs that I absolutely could not put down. It came out way back when I was 10 years old, when the local comic shop of my youth was still operating and a relatively short bike ride away. At that time, the owner was rewarding the grade school kids with free comics dependent on how many A’s they got on their report cards. Granted it was the cheaper titles, but who cares! They were free!

And one of the first free books I landed thanks to my academic aptitude just so happened to be Web of Spider-Man #101. Bear in mind around this time I had just started collecting comics, and by and large all my money went to Wolverine (at least until X-Men 25 happened). So I really had no idea what the backstory was on Carnage, Venom, Cloak, Dagger…well basically any of the characters appearing in “Maximum Carnage” aside from our web slinging hero and Captain America.

One aspect that I really enjoyed was actually being able to put the majority of the series together as it hit the new release rack, generating much monthly anticipation for the next part in the series (and the seemingly interminable wait until Spider-Man Unlimited #2 was released!). There was just one problem – I had collected parts 2 through 14! Whoops, still need Spider-Man Unlimited #1! But there’s only one copy in the back issue box, and it’s… (Gasp!) ...$6!!! A veritable fortune for a jobless 10 year old, one that could buy me like three Wolverine issues! What to do?

Obviously I eventually bought part 1, though probably much later than when I had the means to do so (the aforementioned X-Men 25 ultimately led me to swear off comics for a while, basically until Wolverine 145 was released). Now, could you imagine if they tried to make a movie out of this series? Yikes, definitely require an R rating to do it justice! But the way the last few Spider-Man movies have gone they’d probably cast Lindsay Lohan as Carnage. Which might actually be fitting when you think about it…

Alright enough talk, on to the books! It took a little bit with ASM 380 being the final holdout, but the full SS 9.8 run has been assembled!
