Set Description:
Synopsis: This set contains 9 of the first 11 issues with a minimum grade of 9.6. All of our issues are highest graded examples with three topping the census by themselves.
Background: Marvel’s Fantasy Masterpieces was a publication from 1966-1967, which reprinted stories from Marvel’s Golden Age. The title was published bi-monthly only ran for 11 issues, after which it was replaced by Marvel Super-Heroes, which took up the numbering. Many of the books were square bound and most featured artwork by Jack Kirby.
This set combines the Fantasy Masterpieces run and the Marvel Super-Heroes run, although outside numbering, the titles seem to share little in common. The latter run features three comics that became at least mini-keys, #12, #13 and #18, which featured the origin and first appearances of Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The latter run ended in November 1971 and many of those later issues have had very few examples graded by CGC. Congratulations to Kingfisher for finding most if not all of them before selling his collections.
Our Collection: This is just a starter set for now, but it does feature the single highest graded Pacific Coast copy of Issue #1, the appearance of which on the market prompted us to start this set. We also have picked up several more issues in the original Fantasy Masterpieces run, but have put no effort into collecting the later books. We may try to add to the set as the opportunity and finances permit, but it’s not a huge priority.
