Set Description:
I'm on a 5-year mission (it will probably take much longer) to boldly collect all 61 of the Star Trek Gold Key comics in high grades.
I grew up watching old reruns of TOS with my dad, plus all the great films. We of course got hooked on TNG as well, and all the other spinoffs. I love the stories, the adventures, and the lessons that Star Trek has imparted on the world. It's something I hope to pass onto my 4-year old son.
If you own any duplicates you'd like to sell, please let me know. Thank you! -- Matty

Captain's log stardate 09.12.2023. Two years into my mission I'm about 75% the way there in collecting the whole set. It's been an exhilarating, albeit expensive process to win at auction or purchase these books in high grades. And it's always gutting to see one of the ones I'm looking for get snatched away by a bidder with far bigger pockets than me. But that's the challenge and I'm loving every minute of it.
Captain's log stardate 09.23.2023. I created another STGK set for my duplicate copies. One interesting note about that set: I recently acquired two 20-cent cover versions of issues #14 and #15. The 20-cent #14 is the only one to be graded so far by CGC. The 20-cent #15 is the highest graded of only four that have been graded so far by CGC. You can check out photos of them in the "MattyA's Star Trek Gold Key Duplicates" set. Clearly these aren't as highly valued or coveted as the photo-back cover variants of issues #2 and #3. But they are certainly rarer, at least based on the current CGC census.
Captain's log stardate 11.07.2023. A big (and expensive) haul on Heritage Auctions last month now has me in striking distance of completing the set. I was pleased to finally nab a 9.6-graded copy of issue #8 after many attempts over the past two years. I was also able to win a 9.8-graded copy of issue #22 for a realized price of $660. The last time a 9.8 #22 sold was back in 2016 for a whopping $4,780! To be fair, I believe it was the only 9.8-graded copy at the time, and it is slightly nicer than the one I won. But still, happy to get such a high-graded copy (one of only four currently on the CGC census) at what feels like a reasonable price.
Captain's log stardate 05.04.2024. I just added issue #41. That leaves me with just two (non-variant) books remaining: #9 and #14. I actually have a #9 in a CBCS 9.6; I've just been hesitant to submit it for regrading by CGC. I also have a #14, an 8.5-graded, 20-cent variant copy that it's in my duplicates set. I'd love to find at least a 9.2 copy before adding it to this set, though high-grade copies of #14 rarely seem to come up. And then of course that leaves the key back-cover variants, #2 and #3. Getting those in decent condition is going to be very difficult and very expensive.
Captain's log stardate 07.26.2024. Two big additions to the set today. A 9.4 #1 that I won on Heritage Auctions back in April of this year and a 9.6 #9 that I originally purchased on eBay in 2021 as a CBCS 9.6 that I had regraded by CGC. Below is a list of what is remaining for me to feel that my set is complete. Can I accomplish it within my 5-year mission timeframe (by Sep. 2026)? Doubtful!
- An upgrade of #3 to a 9.6 or better
- #14 in a 9.4 or better
- An upgrade of #27 to a 9.6 or better
- The three price and back-cover variants for #2 and #3 in 8.0 or better
If you own any of these and are interested in selling or trading, or know someone who is, please send me a message. Thank you!
