Set Description:
WELCOME! I really only had #13 originally as a kid and then later learned of #16's close-to-home WNY, "Niagara Falls Nightmare" story, yet this run has truly grown on me. This particular Bronze-Age title is arguably one of the more bizarre Marvel creations towards the later-1970's. Billed as a "real hero", the comic book Human Fly was based on a real person. In this case the book was obviously based on a Canadian daredevil named Rick Rojatt, who himself was almost killed in a car accident in 1971. Noting a similar, yet not as well-known career to the legendary Evel Knievel, Rojatt was known to have never been photographed without his "Human Fly" costume, as seen in the Marvel comic of the same name. It has been speculated that we can owe the existence of this title to the fact that the late, great, Evel Knievel had refused to grant Marvel Comics the property license to do so. The somewhat campy stories tend to revolve around the general criminal tomfoolery and oppression that seemed to permeate The Fly's for-charity stuntwork shows. Sometimes referencing real events, issue #11 in particular features Rojatt's actual failed attempt to jump over 26 buses at the Montreal Olympic Stadium in Oct. 1977 on a Rocket-Cycle! Though occasionally featuring other Marvel co-stars like Spider-Man, Daredevil, Ghost Rider and the White Tiger the main focus of these stories was on The Human Fly, his rag-tag stunt crew and the everyday folks they help along the way. This is a hoot of a series that you can regularly score on the cheap for some entertaining, if not kitschy reading. In fact, most of the artwork in this series was created by Golden-Age legends: Lee Elias, Bob Lubbers and Frank Robbins! Consiquently, I'm also the proud owner of the original art for the final page of issue #17! I am tremendously proud of this particular CGC set - featuring 6 of my 11 Winnipeg Pedigree books and having numerous, current "Highest Graded" census copies. In fact, see my recent Registry Journal entries to learn more about my recent quest to obtain a CGC graded #15, which now complete, has polished this set off 100% (though I'm always looking for upgrades)! Thanks so much for looking... CHECK 'EM OUT!
