"Knowledge will give you power, but character respect."- Bruce Lee |
Peter Stanchek (AKA Sting): Sting is your guy from the wrong side of the tracks who eventually sees the world from a different perspective. He reminds me of a younger version of Harada only he’s not Japanese and he isn’t set in his ways….yet. He discovers he possesses extraordinarily strong psionic abilities and although he starts out with selfish intents (think Purple Man from Jessica Jones) he ends up becoming a fine example of a sort of anti-hero (everyone has their baggage.) He began as a student of Toyo’s until they had a falling out when he was enlightened to Harada’s penchant for achieving his goals at any cost when Harada kills his best friend. Peter forms an alliance with Kris, Zephyr, Flamingo and Torque, determined to disrupt any plans of Harada and his Harbinger Foundation.
Kris Hathaway: Although she lacks any kind of extraordinary physical abilities or psionic powers, she possesses the intelligence and is the voice of reason that keeps the team grounded and out of trouble…well, mostly. Faith Herbert (AKA Zephyr): Zephyr, known as Zeppelin to her friends can fly and who doesn’t want to fly! She actually founded the Harbinger Resistance. Charlene Dupre (AKA Flamingo): Flamingo This girl….is on fire! Careful or you may get burned. John Torkelson (Torque): So, Torque was just minding his own business and doing what he knows (mechanic) when this guy, Sting, comes along and starts messing with his brain. Next thing you know he’s super strong and full of endurance (not that he probably needed that in spades when you look at his already enormous physique! He’s the tough guy that turns out to be a good friend when you get to know him. Amanda McKee (Livewire): One of Harada’s Eggbreakers for a while, Livewire has the ability to manipulate electromagnetic forces and one of her weapons of choice is a wire (get it?) Anyways, she has a chip on her shoulder (but it’s probably shorted by all her electromagnetic powers!) She’s another one that got away from Harada (guess he rubs people the wrong way). Edward Sedgewick (Stronghold): Another former member of the "Eggbreakers. He can absorb the mass of other things to make himself bigger and badder, literally! As with Livewire and Sting, he eventually reached his own breaking point after killing another Harbinger working under orders from Harada…are you getting the picture that Harada isn’t the nicest guy? "All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth."- Friedrich Nietzsche | VILLAIN ALERT!!! Toyo Harada: Megalomaniacal psionic with delusions of grandeur. Ok so his intentions are ok but he goes about it the wrong way, (think Tony Stark from Marvel crossed with Professor X with a dash of Lex Luthor). He sends his henchmen (the Eggbreakers) to do his dirty work all in the name of saving mankind from itself. Definitely not someone to be met lightly and comes across as a sort of anti-hero depending on your perspective (walk a mile in someone else’s shoes).
I started collecting Harbinger back around the beginning of its original run but ended up taking a hiatus when the comic market got a little carried away with variants. Flash forward to 2015 when I decided to visit the local Comic Con. I ended up buying a Wolverine 1988 series issue #1 graded CGC 9.8. I hadn’t really thought about it much up to that point, but the collecting bug was rekindled. I dug out my collection that had been stored away and decided to start submitting my back issues. I looked online to fill gaps in my various collections and thousands of dollars later, I’ve acquired quite a few comics and am trying to avoid collecting too many series at a time! My favorites at this point are the Wolverine 1988 series, Alias 2005 and Harbinger’s 1992 series. I have collected a few odds and ends in between and will eventually fill out my Rai 1992, Shadowman 1992, Psylocke Mini Series 2010 and the various X-23 and NYX series and will consider other series once I have the bulk of these filled up. I also like to collect covers I find appealing (see Incredible Hulk 340) and 1st appearances here and there. It’s all a labor of love! |
