Fifth Printing
Louise Simonson story
Jon Bogdanove and Dennis Janke cover & art
1st full appearance of Doomsday.
I may or may not have had this printing as a kid. I got a "Death of Superman" collectors set at Toys R Us in 1994, this was a flimsy box set with the seven issues of the storyline, all reprints. I think I remember the DC Universe Logo on the Man of Steel #18 from the box set, but many have stated that their copies of Man of Steel #18 from that box set were the fourth print. I also picked up several two packs at Toys R Us around the same time to get the issues for "Funeral for a Friend," which may have had an 18 fifth print. Whichever printing of Man of Steel #18 I had as a kid has long since vanished. I had no idea I would be interested in re-collecting these multiple printings over 20 years later. Collecting these later printing not only take me back to those Toys "R" Us trips in 1994/95 - my mom couldn't say "no" - but I've come to really enjoy the hunt.
I want to like the 4th print the best, due to it being the most difficult to find in high grade with it's lower distribution numbers, but I really like how the 5th print differs visually from the rest of them. The "DC Universe" bar code variation really sets it apart, the enlarged #18 in the left corner looks just like the newsstand edition, and the distribution method of the book - collectors packs at Toys "R" Us and other retail stores two years after the release of the 1st print also set the 5th apart. This is also the only book out of the whole Death and Funeral sage to get a 5th printing.
