ACTION COMICS #351 CGC 9.6-THE BOSTON PEDIGREE

This cover along with Action Comics #353 were inspired by a real-world conflict: the circulation war between Superman and his once-fiercest newsstand competitor, Fawcett Comics Captain Marvel-a caped champion who invoked the powers of the mythological gods by shouting the word "Shazam!" Though the good Captain was forced into retirement in 1953, depriving millions of younger readers of the chance to see Superman and his rival duke it out for the championship title of "World's Mightiest Mortal," Action Comics provided the next best thing in 1967: a battle royal between the Action Ace and the thinly disguised "Zha-Vam." To no one's surprise, Superman won. By all accounts, he accepts no substitutes, whether they be the villainous Zha-Vam or Captain Strong from Action Comics #421, who was strong to the finish, 'cause he ate his "alien seaweed," which gave the squinty-eyed, pipe-smoking captain the bulging biceps of another, more famous sailor man. Metropolis, apparently, had room for only one True Blue-SUPERMAN.
