Villains Brainiac, Marauder, Grax (four arms), and Lex Luthor appear with Lois Lane, Batman and Jimmy Olson to make one of my favorite Nick Cardy covers. This special piece and I have history; the story goes that I first had another 9.8 copy of #417, with less than perfect cover centering, that I had purchased from an eBay "Buy It Now" listing and was one of my first expensive pieces. Within a few days of buying my other graded #417, this Winnipeg copy appeared, also on eBay. At the time (Nov. 2006) there were only 2 9.8 copies listed in the census. I thought to myself how I should have waited, as this latest listing was cheaper, from a pedigree and had perfect cover centering. I also thought about how it would be nice to say I had both 9.8 examples, but I held off. The listing ended without a bidder and I kicked myself for holding back.
About three years later the Winnipeg example appeared on the ComicLink Exchange, where it stayed for a long time. I really wanted the piece but I was focused on other books, so I kept putting it off. One day the book was no longer listed and I kicked myself yet again for passing it up a second time. Distracted by the cover miswrap on my first copy, I consigned it to an online auction, I took a loss but I wanted to move on from the experience of buying too soon and passing on better opportunities.
When I got a rare third chance to purchase this piece, in January, 2013 I took it. Maybe I paid too much, maybe I could have bargained for a cheaper price but I didn’t hesitate, I had to have this piece in my hands. After six years of waiting, and kicking myself, I finally had the Winnipeg copy of Action Comics #417, the piece I should have bought the first time around. I love the vibrant colors of this piece, the overall crispness of the book makes me smile every time I pull the book from the collection for viewing. I also have a nice story to go along with it.

Winnipeg Pedigree
Sold in a few different lots this Marvel collection that spans the 1960s to Copper Age. A large portion were brought to market by Showcase New England during the late 1990s. Known for having the owner's name written on the top of the cover of the pre-1965 issues, there are many high quality examples of this pedigree, and there have been rumblings that these may just be the under copies of the original owner's collection!
