Owner's Description

This is the <i>SOLE SURVIVOR</i> from 20 raw books that I sent in for grading when they should have stayed home safe and sound in their bags and boards. Although nineteen of its brothers and sisters were unsuccessful, this one book came back all alone graded 9.8!

This book was from my second submission of 20 books. The first submission returned 14 9.8's, some of which were from my original collection. The second submission of 20 books (including this one) were ones I had gathered from various sources over the course of about nine months. I did not think they were all definite 9.8's but I hoped for the best with pressing. No fault of CCS, but I expected too much. The temptation was too great to send in my best copy of a book when six other copies I found were no better, particularly when it can sometimes be such a close call between 9.8 and 9.6. Even with pressing, this submission only returned this one Universal Label 9.8.

When this book returned 9.8 it was one of three 9.8's in the census. One of the other 9.8's was on eBay for $500.00 BIN. No telling if it will sell for that price but, not counting pressing, this submission cost me $380.00 so if I wanted to rationalize my failure, I could say that at least I got my investment back on this one book alone.

Most importantly though, this submission taught me a lot about being patient and waiting for those natural 9.8's to come along, rather than expecting too much out of pressing.

Having said all that, I really love this book on it's own but it will always mean a little more to me because it was the lone 9.8 from a 20 book submission.
