Owner's Description

A 9.9 WP Copy. A Direct Edition.
Currently worth 200 CGC points, the highest points for this issue.

CENSUS: as of June 2016.
6 copies at 9.9. I presume all White Pages. The second most 9.9 Daredevil issues, currently tied with DD #181. I have no idea why, maybe that CGC good day thing...
318 copies in 9.8.
129 more copies in 9.6 out of 543 graded copies.
8 SS copies. 3 graded at 9.8.
And the "The Man Without Fear" sub-title and the larger Daredevil font seemingly are here to stay, although breaking apart in blue artsy cover. I also see a little Gil Kane in the cover...
There were separate Direct Issues and Newstand variants for issue number 186 and this pattern follows through the entire Daredevil Miller era run. I have been told the numbers of direct edition vs. newstand versions ranged proportionally 60-40 to 70-30 for each type, depending on the issue.
The newstand variants are much rarer in high grade, as they lived their life on a heavily fondled newstand, not in a direct edition mailer. This ratio also varies, with approximately one out of five (some issues one out of 20!) issues being graded 9.8 as the rarer Newstand Variant. Newstand Variants are hard to get, but not impossible.
Newstand variants have the price in a square box next to the issue number at the top of the letter box, the direct editions have the price and issue number in a diamond shape within the letter box.
Returns to a normal size comic with a new price of 60 cents. Probably some UK variants too.

VALUE:
Expect to pay $50-100 for a basic 9.8WP Copy, easily more if excellent structure and more again if signed. And add a premium for the “Newstand Variant”, generally sold for around $200 now. The Newstands seem rare.
A good issue to have Klaus Janson autograph.
ALL the issues from 170 to 191 are generally available on EBay or the auction houses every month. I have seen no sketches on any SS copy, but expect one sooner or later.

CREATOR DETAILS:
Cover Artists, Frank Miller and Klaus Janson.
Writers, Frank Miller.
Penciler, Klaus Janson.
Inker, Klaus Janson.
Colorist, Klaus Janson.
Letterer, Joe Rosen.
Editors, Denny O’Neil.

ISSUE TITLE "Stilts".

STORY LINE:
Matt begins gathering criminal evidence to prosecute Glenn industries. Turk steals the Stilt Man armor and tries to prove himself to the Kingpin and fails miserably. DD's hyper senses start working badly. Matt pressures Heather into accepting his proposal of marriage.

NOTES and TRIVIA:
This is the first issue of Daredevil penciled and inked solely by Klaus Janson.
I also believe the original cover artwork was just sole on Heritage Auctions for a chunk of money.

Published every month now.
First published in September 1982.
