"The Last of the Batsons"

An old feller named Wild Bill Batson rides into town on horseback and claims to be Billy Batson grandfather based on nothing more than the name similarity. Billy doubts it particularly since he's an orphan (although if Billy Batson was his birth name I'm not sure why that would matter. Billy tries to leave but Wild Bill lasso's him and takes him on a horseback ride. When Wild Bill sees some crooks he pulls a gun but Capt. Marvel has to step in to save Wild Bill from the armed bandits. Afterwards WIld Bill tells Capt. Marvel he has proof and he's Billy's grandfather back at his ranch so the two head out west.

When they arrive at the ranch Wild Bill tries to stop a herd of stampeding buffalo but once again Capt. Marvel needs to assist.once again. Afterwards Wild Bill shows him his proof which includes a photo album of two children Billy and Mary who ran away as children never to be seen again. Billy Batson is fairly convinced. Later a young crook enters and tries to rob WIld Bill but Capt Marvel once again takes care of the problem but Cap notices a bran on the crooks arm which is the same as the brand on the picture of young Billy Batson in Wild Bill's photo album. Turns out the crook was actually Wild Bill's grandson and the two are happily reunited. Mary apparently died but no one seems that broken up.

Slug has a plan to rob WHIZ of $15,000 that's stored in the safe. The stations usual night watchmen is out so Billy offers to stay overnight to help out Mr. Morris. The young crook breaks in with safe cracking tools and once again Billy changes to Capt Marvel only to change back again when challenged by the boy crook. This time Billy wins and he finds out the boys name is Tommy and he's also an orphan. When Billy turns Tommy takes a hammer and brains him. When Billy regains his senses he changes back to Cap and follows Tommy to a apartment but before entering changes back to Billy. He feels Tommy can be redeemed but doesn't want to go in as Marvel. As Billy enters Slug gets the drop on him and gags him. Tommy pulls the gag off and tells Billy to change (there goes his secret identity). Cap punches out Slug and Tommy promises to reform.

Billy is sent to stay with some lumberjacks for some R&R and they regale him with tall tales of Paul Bunyan. When Billy expresses doubt about the stories the lumberjacks claim to be quite serious that Bunyan exists to this day. The next day a rotten tree topples towards some lumberjacks. Billy changes to Capt Marvel and after catching the tree the lumberjacks all believe him to be Paul Bunyan returned.Later Cap breaks up a dangerous log jam and the lumberjacks again praise him as Paul Bunyan.
