Owner's Description

This is the first copy of this printing to be graded and it came back 9.8! Not only that, but it is from my own submission!

I'm so happy to have been the first one to send this book in and to have also gotten it back 9.8. It makes the hunt worthwhile and also makes me feel like I'm doing my part for the betterment of this Set Type!

When I first added this book to my set it was so new that, although I was able to add the book to the Registry, the third printing didn't exist in the census yet! That's kinda cool but also makes me wonder how the slot was created before this book existed as I thought a graded book had to be shipped from CGC before that could happen. Maybe the slot was created before those guidelines went into place. Anyways, I am glad the slot was already there so I didn't have to wait for it to be created! I was way too excited to add this book to my set to wait!

About a week after I received the book the census was updated and the book finally existed there as well. I included census info in the second picture showing that this was the first book graded of this third printing, and also the only 9.8 at the time. This book, like my Action Comics 684 second printing, blows me away that it took nearly 30 years for one to be submitted for grading. Unlike the Action Comics 684 second printing though, this one was submitted by a collector (me) to be kept in a collection, rather than sold.

I had went through several purchases of this book raw with it included in stacks of other Funeral for a Friend books. This one had some rolls here and there but I didn't see anything that broke color. It was a close call in my mind but I decided to give it a try through CCS and see how it graded. This is one of those occasions where I am really happy to pay the extra fee for pressing as it certainly worked out.

Unlike the other later printings in this set, where the title colors had been changed and the roman numeral added, this one appears to have colors identical to the first printing and only the roman numeral III is a visual giveaway that this is a later printing (other than the red outer cover on the first printing, of course). I really love all of the neat little quirks of this set.

Update - in June 2022 another copy of this book that I submitted also earned a 9.8 and became the third 9.8 to enter the census. That same submission also included an Adventures of Superman 505 that became only the second copy of that book to earn 9.8... you can check out both 9.8 copies of that book in it's second picture slot.
