Owner's Description

This book is from my own submission and is the second 9.8 to enter the census!

It replaced a 9.6 that was from my original raw collection. The addition of this book put my set at 94 of 98 books graded at least 9.8! I submitted a total of five copies of this book through four different submissions before the last two I sent in both received 9.8. They are the second and third 9.8's to join the census!

The 9.6 that previously occupied this slot was, aside from being my original copy, also from my second submission of 20 books. There was a slight crease in the foil near the spine but I decided to give it a try with pressing to see how it would turn out. Ironically, the grader notes did not mention the crease but did state very light indent center of back cover which I must have completely missed. My conclusion was that CCS can press foil covers so I had a better idea of what to look for in raw candidates.

There was only one 9.8 in the census at the time so I then started the hunt for solid raw copies to submit. I bought a lot of 10 of this issue and found one out of that batch that was worth submitting. I ended up not submitting that one because I found a better copy in a collector's pack.

The collector's pack that this book can be found in is in the second picture slot. I have opened three of these now and only found the one copy worth submitting. The covers tend to have scratches/indents, or the corners are dinged. All of the copies of this book that I have found in the wild seem to have the same crease near the spine that my original copy had near the triangle number. It technically doesn't break color because of the nature of the foil but I think it would on any other book.

The copy I submitted from the collector's pack also received a 9.6 but with no grader notes. When I received it back from CGC, I noticed a small ding on the back cover that I hadn't seen before, and which I'm pretty sure will keep it from upgrading to 9.8, even with another press. I then submitted the copy that came from the lot of 10 and it received a 9.4, bummer.

This book is really easy to find raw, and also very cheap (I bought raw copies for around $3.00 each on average), but because of what I think is the soft foil, nice copies are hard to find. Because of this, I never ceased my search for raw copies while continuously submitting copies for grading. I then bought a nice looking lot of five copies of this book, and also went back through all of the other copies I now had stacked up looking for more submission candidates. I ended up finding two really nice looking copies in my total inventory that I thought had 9.8 potential with pressing. These two also did not have the usual crease near the triangle number. I submitted them and these are the two that finally received 9.8’s! There were a total of 15 9.6's and 51 total books graded at the time, and these books made three 9.8's so that should give you an idea of how easy it is to get close, but still not achieve 9.8 with this book.

My search for this book never stopped; I received another 10 copies of this book in the mail the day before receiving the grade on this book… of those 10 there were four that deserved a closer look at possible submission but I will hang onto them raw now that I have a 9.8 in my set.

I am really happy to finally have this book graded 9.8 and will be keeping both of the 9.8's I submitted in my collection.
