Synopsis for “Mjolnir's Song”:*
Thor and Jormungand battle as never before. Mighty and deathly blows they strike against each other. They clash one final time, striking with each of their unfettered might, creating like unto a new star. Jormungand lies dead, and Thor... his armor lies empty. Would you know more?"
*Synopsis from marvel.fandom.com
Favorite line(s) and some thoughts:
"I have read the pitiful fragments of mortal legends that survive telling of the battle between us at the end of time!" -....Truly, mortals are the most incorrigible fabulists!" -Jormungand, who as gigantic mythical monsters goes is a rather literate one.
"...Heroes have an infinite capacity for stupidity!" -Thor, hurling Mjolnir and himself at Jormungand in a heroic and seemingly suicidal effort to kill his greatest foe.
In this collector's humble opinion the single greatest issue in Walt's run and tied with Stan and Big John Buscema's Silver Surfer no. 4 for my very favorite comic book. This is Walt's take on the battle between Thor and the world serpent Jormungandr that, according to Norse mythology, will take place at Ragnarok. The foes are destined to slay one another, an outcome that Walt cleverly circumvents before all is said and done.
Walt adopts the style of a Skald, or epic poet. The all-splash page idea came to him in a "Eureka" moment...you can hear him describe that revelation in the last episode of this excellent podcast: https://thelightningandthestorm.com/.
I can remember exactly where I was when I first laid eyes on this book some 35 years ago. I read it to shreds, which is why I'm so amped to have Walt's signature on this copy along with a portrait in miniature of Thor.
