Owner's Description
Smokey Bear was created in 1944 by the Ad Council as a mascot of the United States Forest Service to educate the public on the dangers of forest fires. He has been serving this function ever since, and today remains familiar in our culture.

Smokey Bears first comic appearance was in Four Color #653 (1955) in a comic titled "Smokey Bear." He continued to appear about once a year in Four Color Comics until that series came to an end in 1962. Another appearance was in the giveaway comic "The True Story of Smokey Bear," which first appeared in 1960 and had several additional printings in the 1960s. The Forest Service also had several other giveaways listed in Overstreet from the 1960s, but these are more like storybooks than Comic Books.

Additionally, from 1970 to 1973, Gold Key Comics had 13 issues of Smokey Bear for sale at the newsstand (as opposed to a giveaway comic.)

Then nothing. No comics (except probable additional printing of "The True Story of Smokey Bear" until we come to this Kite Fun Book copyright 1984. Best guess is this was prepared in late 1983 and released to schools in the spring of 1984. This book has only been identified as being released by Southern California Edison. This comic is Bi-lingual (English and Spanish)

Population was this is the only copy in CGC 9.6 NM+. It has off-white to white pages. There are none graded higher. (As of 6/7/2010.)

The comic itself consist of:
(Cover) As shown
(pg 2-7) Smokey Bear Kite Safety Story
(pg 8-9) Smokey Bear Activity Pages
(pg 10-12) Smokey Bear Story continued
(pg 13) Identify the identical Smokeys
(pg 14) Find 30 hidden birds
(pg 15) Last page Smokey Bear Kite Safety Story
(pg 16/back cover) Six Kite Flying Rules and Nine Energy Savings Tips. (All in two languages. This is a crowded page)

Note that in this book the instructions to build a kite are incorporated in the story instead of as a seperate feature.
