The Great Cover Artist Mr. Jim Aparo

Category:  Cover Artists
Owner:  Tec-Tac-Toe
Last Modified:  7/8/2018
Set Description
This set presents the covers that were drawn by the incredibly talented artist Mr. Jim Aparo.

As I recall, among the comic book covers that immediately struck me as a "wow" when I would eagerly go purchase comic books starting in 1968 at the almost corner grocery store, most were by Mr. Aparo. In my opinion, his ability to capture the essence of the character, especially The Batman, on the rather limited canvas that is a comic book cover is equaled by a very few other comic book cover artists, then and now. His sleek lines and exploding with action and movement covers ensure that one looks upon them, despite perhaps viewing them again and again, with fresh eyes every time. Mr, Aparo's artistic abilities are what comic books ARE and, unfortunately, few artists, in my view, have that ability/skill/talent.

Of course, while I very much enjoy a well written and paced story, I love the art, especially covers, because it is what draws me (please excuse me) to a comic book first, even when I know that the comic book is, for example, likely well written. Without what I consider great comic book art, the comic book will perhaps never quite be among my favorite, although that list frequently changes.

Set Goals
What are my collecting goals for this set? Well, although I already own a few CGC graded comic books with an Aparo cover, I hope to obtain the ones that I do not own. My more modest goal is to simply enjoy putting this set together, CGC graded comic book by CGC graded comic book and spending the money to do so. ... ... ... Well, not so much the latter.

Detective Comics 497 9.8 The CGC graded 9.8 copy of Detective Comics 497 has "landed" in the collection after several years during which I looked for a near-perfect copy of this book. Although I was finally able to obtain this issue for this set, the cover is rather depressing; Batgirl sits dejectedly in a prison cell as Batman and company look at her thinking-but they can't-did she do it.

The great Jim Aparo is the cover artist for this issue and, as to be expected, crafted another gorgeous cover.

This book is a keeper unless a CGC graded or "raw" 9.9 or 10 copy were to come along.
