Set Description:

Synopsis: This is a starter set of just 11 books, all of which are highest graded examples with Issue #1 and #10 holding that distinction alone.

Background: Marvel Tales by any other name would be a Marvel Collectors’ Item Classic. Yes, these books, which commence a year later in time, do exactly what the Marvel Tales title does, which is reprint issues of classic titles, which originally hit the newsstands a few years earlier.

Most of our books in both titles came from the auction of the Federal Hill Collection on CL. But while I was able to obtain a number of the Marvel Tales from that collection, some collector/speculator out there coveted these books much more than the Marvel Tales title, so that I lost most of the books from this set in the auction.

In fact, as of the time that I am writing this description, I have just 11 books from this title. Fortunately, four of them are the first four issues. These books were part of the Federal Hill Collection and I had hoped to buy more, but after I got the first two, someone started paying much more per book than they ever merited in my mind. After all, they are still reprints. Nonetheless, we may try to pick up some more issues in the future, when prices are more favorable. But for the time being, you could hardly call our few books a set.

Marvel Collectors’ Item Classics #1 seems to be yet another one of several efforts by Marvel to capitalize on the popularity of issues readers missed in the 1960s. In the vein of Marvel Tales, this inaugural issue reprinted four stories from earlier in the decade, specifically FF #2, the first Skulls, ASM #3, the first Doc Octopus. TTA #36, the second Any-Man, and the first Tales of Asgard from JIM #85.

Our WP 9.8 is the finest copy in existence of this 1966 classic. It comes from KingFisher’s Federal Hill Collection. We acquired the book from the CL Auction on 4/28/2021.

Marvel did not release Issue #2 until April 1966, 14 months after the first issue. The issue contains reprints of ASM #4, the first Sandman, FF #3, and TYA #37. Our 9.8 comes from the Twin Cities and Federal Hill Collections and is currently tied for highest graded in the Census. We acquired the book from the 4/28/2021 CL Auction.*
