Pedigree: Savannah
*Pedigree Background* This collection was discovered by Shelton Drum, owner of Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find in North Carolina, and consigned to Heritage Auctions in its entirety (40,000). Drum purchased the comics from the original collector, a Savannah, GA resident who was middle-aged in the late 1950s when he began collecting in earnest, but continued purchasing every comic he could for the following 50 years.
“I was amazed by the consistent quality of the comics from 1959 and up,” Drum said. “While quite a few people have extensive collections of superhero comics from that era, almost nobody bought every genre. This collection also has all of the science fiction, horror/mystery, romance, and war comics, as well – lots of books you don’t usually see as a dealer or a collector. This guy bought everything! He collected DCs and Marvels as well as the other publishers like Charlton and Dell.”

Story Title: "And Who Shall Mourn For Him"
*Synopsis* Breaking into the Baxter Building, the Silver Surfer steals Reed's space-scrambler in hopes that he can use it to break through the barrier which Galactus has put it around Earth. However, the Surfer is unaware that the device has not been perfected, and when he uses it, the device explodes knocking him unconscious and sending him back to Earth. He is recovered and brought home by physicist Al Harper, who sympathizes and can relate to the Surfers plight. Harper agrees to help the Surfer, however he needs the money to create the devices necessary to breach the barrier. Dawning human clothing, the Surfer sets out to get the money that Al needs in order to conduct the work needed. At first the Surfer breaks into a bank to take the money he needs, but realizes that doing so would be dishonorable when he's spotted by the security guard. He then restores the damage and erases the guards memories of the incident before resuming his mission. Out in an alley he runs across a man who has been roughed up after losing all his money in an illegal gambling room after he realized the dice he was rolling were weighted. The Surfer decides that is how he will earn the money that he needs. Taken to the gambling room, the Surfer uses his cosmic powers to clean up and win more than enough money that is needed. However, the operators of the gambling room are not impressed with having lost so much money and beat up the Surfer and tries to run him down, however the man who told him of the gambling room tries to stop it and is struck himself. Fed up, the Surfer disables the mobsters car, and gives the man some of his money before returning to Al.
With the money, Harper is able to build the devices that the Surfer needs to get to Earth, however as it happens the Surfer is trying to free himself just as the Stranger has come to Earth to destroy it after his previous experiences on the planet leads him to believe the planet does not deserve to sustain life. Detecting the Surfer's presence on the Earth, the Stranger informs the Surfer of his plans to destroy the Earth with a Null-Life Bomb so that the Surfer can leave. Not wishing the destruction of the Earth, the Surfer battles the Stranger, but is easily defeated. Deciding that he needs help in finding the bomb and defeating the Stranger, the Surfer gets Al to help him. While Al tracks down the bomb with a radiation detecting device, the Surfer battles the Stranger in the city. Although Al is attacked by a mob finding his activities suspicious, Al manages to find the bomb and disarms it, although at the cost of his own life. With the bomb destroyed, the Stranger is forced to retreat. The Surfer then tracks down his friend and gives him a proper burial, and leaves a marker of everlasting flame.

Story Title: "World's Without End!"

There he learns that it's possible to travel through time if he traveled at faster than light speed. Believing that maybe in the future the barrier would have been dropped the Surfer speeds around the Earth faster than the speed of life and ends up in the distant future. Traveling to Zenn-La, the Surfer also learns that his home world had also been decimated. Traveling to a work where he finds life, the Surfer learns that they've all devolved into savages. Attacked, the Surfer is soon taken prisoner of soldiers who take him to the Overlord, a indestructible mutant who has become a tyrannical ruler who has taken over most of the universe. When the Overlord puts some of his slaves at risk, the Surfer tries to stop him and attacks him, however finds himself over powered and easily defeated. Taken to a holding cell by the last survivor of Zenn-La revives the Surfer and tells him the origins of the Overlord: That his father was irradiated by a defective nuclear reactor, and once the boy had become full grown he began rampaging across the universe taking over all because he was indestructible. When the Overlord discovers that his slave has revived the Surfer, he kills him, and sends his troops to attack the Surfer. The Surfer easily defeats the soldiers but unable to destroy the Overlord, the Surfer does something drastic: He travels back in time prior to the Overlord's father being effected by radiation, and destroys the device, causing the Overlord's future to no longer exist, and erasing the Overlord from existence. The Surfer returns to his own time, to find himself once more trapped on Earth.

The Silver Surfer frees himself and flies outside to stop his evil doppelganger. Their fight rages throughout the village and eventually carries out into Earth’s atmosphere. Both combatants are evenly matched. Eventually however, the false Surfer's energy begins to drain away until he loses all power and cohesion. Before long, there is nothing left of him. Pedigree: Oakland
*Pedigree Background* The Oakland collection is a rather large collection that surfaced in the late 90’s (at least 4,000 books), of mostly high grade superhero books from 1967 to 1972. Many collectors consider this collection a “warehouse find” as opposed to a pedigree collection.
This collection obviously originates from the city of Oakland, California. The original owner purchased the books from a local liquor store in exchange for racking the books for the store. He was always careful about how he handled the books, and being the first one with access to the books he was privileged to have the first crack at taking the copies he wanted. He actually wore gloves and used a clean towel as a place mat when handling the books outside of the store. The collection surfaced at Wonder Con in 1998, and three months later was purchased by two dealers; Mike Carbonaro of Neatstuff Collectibles primarily.

Pedigree: Mass. Copy *Pedigree Background* The Massachusetts pedigreed collection of comic books (now affectionately referred to as the Mass. Collection) is a high grade run of Silver Age Marvel and DC titles, with also many books from other publishers including ACG, Gold Key and Charlton.
The collection, approximately 4,000 comic books (and full runs of Marvel magazines) was founded in 1993 by Marnin Rosenberg, a longtime collector and dealer out of Great Neck, New York. Mr. Rosenberg responded to an advertisement in the Comic Buyer’s Guide placed by the original owner (Dennis Richard), who began selling piecemeal portions of his runs of comic books to Mr. Rosenberg, starting with the Marvels.
The books were originally stored in careful and meticulous fashion, stacked on top of one another in near one foot piles in the original owner’s basement. This helps explain the unbelievable freshness and appeal of the books, most of which have superb ink reflectivity and supple, near white to white pages.
Although many of the Marvels first purchased by Mr. Rosenberg were not sold as “Mass.” copies, a very detailed and precise inventory has been preserved as well as accurate sales records, keeping the whereabouts and tracking of individual issues intact.
Many of the early Marvels are in beautiful, high grade condition and amongst the highest so far graded by the Comics Guaranty Corporation (CGC).
Collectively, the Mass. Collection is among the nicest Silver Age pedigrees in the world. Out of the known original owner collections with almost complete Marvel runs, it ranks in the top 5 for overall consistency and high grade percentage of books found in the collection.

"Convincing" the tailors to find him the perfect outfit, the Surfer reflects on his recent adventures and recalls his battle against the Galactus with the Fantastic Four. The Surfer decides that he should contact the Fantastic Four to see if there is anything they can do to destroy the barrier that Galactus had erected. Traveling to the Baxter Building, the Surfer overhears the FF agreeing to help the military in finding the Silver Surfer. Believing himself to have been betrayed, the Surfer flees, and Johnny is allowed to follow after the Surfer as the Human Torch. The two battle across the city, however the Surfer eventually over powers the Torch injuring him in battle. However, the Surfer flees when the military arrives on the scene. The Surfer overhears the Torch tell the military that they were trying to contact the Surfer to get him to help them with their space program, not to take him prisoner. The Surfer, ashamed of his actions, flees.
