Walking Dead #1
Aircel Comics 9/89

Jim Somerville story, cover & art

BEFORE THERE WAS WALKING DEAD...THERE WAS...Walking Dead?

*You cant try and stack up the biggest pile of Walking Dead #1 books without getting the OG Walking Dead #1- this book does not exist in the Image Comics universe- but it is in fact, a Walking Dead #1-

This slab had a scratched case- so i sent it in to re-holder.--(Was i given the option to add a "Walking Dead" label to this book because it shares a name with a similar comic? -Yes I Was- -Did I do it to keep continuity?--Yes I did--)(Is that totally obnoxious?--Probably--) There will be elaboration on this book once i get it back in its fresh new case- for now we have what i find to be very interesting information about this particular book (I have my reasons of course...)
--CGC would not add the Walking Dead label- i guess it was pretty obnoxious to make such a request)

About the publisher: (straight from wiki)

"Aircel was originally a manufacturer of foam insulation. When the government discontinued its contract with the company, employee Barry Blair convinced the owner to shift the company's focus to comic book publishing, which was experiencing a boom] Blair ran the publishing operations, and Aircel's initial talent line-up included him, Dave Cooper, Patrick McEown, and Guang Yap.

Aircel released its first books in 1985: Samurai, Dragonring, and Elflord, all of which featured line art in a style borrowed from manga, which was fairly new to the North American market] In 1986, illustrator Denis Beauvais and writer Gordon Derry collaborated with Blair to create Warlock 5, which featured realistic mixed-media and airbrushing techniques. The Maelstrom series was released shortly thereafter.

In the late 1980s, the independent comics market contracted, hurting niche publishers such as Aircel. Blair struck a deal with Scott Mitchell Rosenberg of Malibu Comics in which the larger publisher would be "lent" Aircel to publish a number of titles, in return for financial assistance. This resulted in a de facto merger with the Malibu imprint Eternity Comics.New illustrators assumed responsibility for continuing some of the existing series (e.g. Elford vol. 2, Warlock 5 vol. 2), which led to ownership disputes over some of these titles. Ultimately, Aircel terminated most of its previous titles and pursued erotic-themed comics with Malibu.

In 1990, Aircel published the series The Men in Black, by Lowell Cunningham and Sandy Carruthers. In 1992 the series was optioned by producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, who developed the idea into the film Men In Black, which became the basis for a film and TV franchise.

In 1991, Aircel's debts were paid off, and Blair quit Aircel, formally handing the company over to Malibu.Aircel ceased publishing in 1994, when Malibu was purchased by Marvel Comics."

About This Comic: (This is from AtomicAvenue.com)

"Jim Somerville created, wrote, and illustrated The Walking Dead, a black-and-white horror comic from Aircel. The Walking Dead shares the same premise as the movie, Night of The Living Dead. In each issue, a group of humans continually fight a horde of undead monsters who are out to take over the world. Meanwhile, the U.S. president is trying to bring his undead wife back to the true life. Graphic violence runs rampant in this four-issue series, which was released in 1989."

SIGNED & SKETCH BY CYRUS RAFTERY ON 7/3/19

*You cant really have a Walking Dead #1 set filled with issue number one comics without having an actual first edition.
This particular number one copy has been turned into a tribute of sorts to the comic itself- and there are several easter-eggs sketched on this copy to celebrate the fantastic ride that the Walking Dead has taken us on.

•The signature date is 7/3/19- the day #193, the last issue of the series, was released

Thank You Rob, Tony, Charlie, Stefano, Image/Skybound- You somehow took an over saturated horror staple like zombies and turned it into an intriguing story that was hard to put down. This book is grounded in reality- so the character deaths are real- there is no coming back- and no one is ever safe from the Walking Dead-- And while I was on nurse duty tending my wife's' wounds from a near fatal car crash- I started at issue number one of this comic tale- and then number 2, then 3- and then I had a stack- and then I decided to grade them with the CGC- not for high grades, or resale, but to preserve the copies of the comic that helped get me through the days of sitting next to a hospital bed. The Walking Dead books I graded eventually turned into an award winning graded comic set- That set was eventually sold off to fund my sketch cover addiction- but I decided to keep ALL the #1 reprints- and even deepen the pile with international covers, and #1 homages. The existence of this comic changed my life- I sometimes wonder why getting dissolved into a world of horror and gloom, murder and pain seems like an escape.
Forever grateful-
-Mr Walking Dead

FINALLY! I found a REAL copy!-- It seems that this comic has been mislabeled several times- the difference between the 3/10 and the 9/10 is the back page- I've seen more than one of these graded as the 9/10 copy- only to have the "Free Comic Book Day" ad on the back- which is WRONG! - it feels good to be legit now! and to go from an incorrect 8.5 to a real 9.6 its like a warm bath in a tub on a beach watching the ocean, and the unicorns are dancing on the white caps....

*This is the first printing of this particular book- which would go on to get 4 printings total-- I think having one of the four printings is enough to represent Argentina in this glorious set- but I do have 3 of the 4 printings- and though I am not concerned with tracking down the third print that I don't currently own- if you see one- let me know...

*UPDATE 6/1/2020-
I have just submitted the 3rd print of this book to the CGC to grade- which concludes the hunt for the 4 ungraded Argentinian prints of this book. Three of these I purchased direct from Argentina, and one of them from....Maryland. This was a fun challenge, an the randomness of getting hold of the third print was pretty random. I was even able to help Pietro with one of these- he lacked the 4th print- I just happened to buy 2- one went to the graders- the other to Italy. If there was a "who helped who more even though its not a competition" score- it would be CY 1, PIETRO 30 (scoreboard names are always are in all-caps)

*This is not a copy I sent in raw-- I bought a CBS 9.8 copy and sent it to CGC for the crossover grade- and of course it graded less. Before I shipped it I debated cracking open the case and subbing it without a grade in hopes to keep the 9.8- I was on a roll of good grades- and then my high grades plummeted- I probably could have scored this book 100 times a few years ago- when I finally want one the market is limited and available copies are in bad shape.

These Weekly books were re-releases of the story up to 2011- Rapid fire issues were distributed to get the tv show fans caught up to speed. Things were blowing up for the Walking Dead-

SIGNED BY ROBERT KIRKMAN, JON BERNTHAL & STEVEN YEUN ON 1/8/11

*This is another #1 Reprint that caught me by surprise- there were 3 or 4 of these books available to purchase online- so I picked the lowest priced graded copy I could find and threw a decent offer to the seller- I honestly did not pay any attention to the signatures- I was more concerned with "Reprints Walking Dead #1" being in the notes. I noticed Mr. Kirkman's name, and I saw that the "then-still-alive-in-the-show" Mr. Yuen also signed the book- and looking at the date of 1/8/11 id say this book was signed at the convention where it was made available in Arizona- The last signature is the one I didn't realy know- but once I did it blew my mind- I know he has done a lot things besides being Shane Walsh; JON BERNTHAL was in "Wolf of Wall Street" which I think is way cooler than being The Punisher- Jon has come a long way from starring in a silly zombie T.V. show-

I don't cherish signatures- sometimes they are a curse- sometimes they are a bonus- the 3 signatures on this cover are ALL sweet bonuses on a book that was limited to 1000- Another exotic edition to add to this amazing comic book set.-- (My raw books from CROATIA are sitting in a box behind me ready to be opened-- I spent $1500 for the entire set- All I wanted was issue #1- now I have them all-- My supremacy in the Serbian Walking Dead world will be unmatched once they are all graded- I have 17 different #1 books at the CGC at this moment as well- I cant afford any of this- I should be saving money for my future--I guess I just don't give a rats-ass about the future-)

*This comic came shipped in a real nice bag- I normally change all the bags when I get new comics- but this time, this one time- I'm keeping the bag....im keeping the bag...so - that means there's a possibility that this book may never come out of this bag; and that human hands might never lay their greasy prints on this sheathed plastic obsession? Maybe I'll touch it just once...just once...

*I bought this copy from someone in Argentina- it is in horrible shape- but its a direct copy from the country of origin. Wouldn't you know after I get this 7.0 back in my stack- a graded 9.6 pops up for sale- and its in Australia- I think I will keep my authentic copy- the only thing I'm really sad about is that I didn't know this was a second print- which means I have to try and locate a first print-(from Argentina)

Norwegian Edition
(This is actually the Swedish Edition)

*This one is tricky- its a Nordic press but it is in fact the Swedish edition...and I honestly feel really horrible about this- but there is a 99.7% chance that I subbed this fabulous book knowing this was a Swedish copy- because my actual Norwegian copy is graded as the Swedish edition- so maybe I thought that when I get all these books graded- I will send them back in and get them corrected- or maybe not- Regardless of labels- this set does contain both the Norwegian and Swedish Editions. (I honestly know 100% this was a Swedish copy because I obtained it from Sweden from a Swedish person)--(OR) (Pietro and I and the Swedish person are all wrong....which is a 99.7% possibility)

Swedish Edition
(or is it?)
This issue is actually the Norwegian Edition- and not the Swedish Edition-
There are no the other copies graded- and there are no competitive sets for Norway or Sweden so this is tough to verify-
I would get CGC involved- but I don't feel like sending this book back and re-processing it through the grading time-line again. So for now- it'll be our little secret...

("They're Norwegians Mac; Not Swedes")- looks like Kurt Russell might have graded this book-
(-that was a "The Thing" movie reference in case you're wondering)(and it was pretty damn genius)

*UPDATE -I did get a correct ungraded Swedish copy from Sweden-- THIS IS NOT THE SWEDISH EDITION--This is a CGC ERROR- This reprint is definitely the NORWEIGIAN Reprint- Which is a really good thing- because the Swedish copy was not too hard to get- but a Norway cover is a whole other situation- This fabulous copy was hunted down and sent my way from the best European comic collector out there- (prove me wrong)- This is another book I didn't know existed until Pietro schooled me yet again- (looks like Pietro is schooling the CGC too---RAY!) (-that was a "Trailer Park Boys" reference in case you're wondering)(and it was pretty damn genius as well)
