2016 eBay buy it now average: $108.50.

So I paid right about what I should have. Also, this is one of my favorite comics because the one in my reader copies collection is one that I had growing up.

Ahh...member berries!

<b><u>ACTION FIGURE</u></b>
OBI WAN KENOBI
Collection/Number: The Original Trilogy Collection (Vintage)
Release Date: 2004
Accessories: Lightsaber, Removable Robe
Variant: Card

This was a very lucky pick-up and one of the first action figures I had bought in a long time. I was home on leave and saw him (and Han Solo) on clearance at Walmart. This is the series that re-ignited my passion for collecting Star Wars action figures.

This comic has been very active in auction, but not in a way that is driving the price up. There have been 9 auctions to 3 'Buy It Now' sales...and one of those was a best offer about $30 less than the asking price.

The first thing that catches my eye about this comic is that it has the old style label; which is really neat and something I personally prize.

2016 eBay buy it now average: $27.00.

Another low activity book. I nabbed it because it looked like a good deal coming in at under the last auction sale...which was also the only sale going back 2 years!

<b><u>ACTION FIGURE</u></b>
BOBA FETT (Animated Debut)
Collection/Number: 30th Anniversary Collection #24
Release Date: 2007
Accessories: Blaster Pistol, Mitrinomon Z-6 Jet Pack, Electropole, and Collector Coin
Variant: 1st Card

So I know the Fett is not in this comic, much less on the cover. AND I know this is not part of any set on the re-issued vintage cards. So why did I pick it? The creature attacking the trio of heroes reminds me of the creatures Luke encounters outside Panna City when he crashes a Y-Wing into the ocean. One of the creatures he encounters is rode by none other than...Boba Fett! Who then rescues Luke and takes him to Panna City to rescue Han from a sleeping virus that has stricken him.

What craziness am I talking about? Why the 1978 TV Movie: <i>The Star Wars Holiday Special</i>! If you've never heard of it (much less seen it); Lucas was so disgusted by it he decreed it never been seen again. However, there may or may not be bootlegs that people recorded on early VCRs. The animated short this figure comes from is also an Easter Egg on the first Blu-Ray release of all six movies.

  Star Wars 33 Modern 9.2 <b><u>ISSUE #33</u></b>
So...this is going to take even more explaining than the lot I bought with 2 #40s and a #68. This was a lot of 2 comics graded at 9.2 for $26.00 (this was an auction), #33 and #50. For #33 there were no sales going back 2 years for this grade of this issue. So I am using figures for the next grade up (the next grade down was 7.5), they were all fixed price so there is no auction total listed.

#33
Purchased 8 October, 2016 on eBay for $13.00.
2016 eBay auction average: No sales.
2016 eBay buy it now average: No sales. (2015 9.4 history: $55.00)

It is pretty much the same story for #50. There are no recorded sales at 9.2, so I had to look at the sales history for the 9.4 books. There were 2, both fixed price and one was in 2016 and the other was 2014. So I just quote the 2016 sale here since I figure there has to be some inflation and the prices are so close to each other.

#50
Purchased 8 October, 2016 on eBay for $13.00.
2016 eBay auction average: No sales.
2016 eBay buy it now average: $40.38.

TOTAL
$26
Total auction average value: No sales.
Total buy it now average value*: $95.38.

I think that absent specific data, this is a win. I am surprised though, I would think #50 would be a key issue. It is a double sized special edition coming shortly after 'The Empire Strikes Back', and it boasts a beautifully painted cover. Oh well, a win for me!

* For the next highest grade.
Prices current as of 14 October, 2016.

Star Wars 38 Modern 9.4 Purchased 29 May, 2016 on eBay for $25.99.
2016 eBay auction average: $21.96.
2016 eBay buy it now average: $42.75.
Prices current as of 14 October, 2016.

Not much action going on here, only 3 sales so far for 2016. 2 auctions and 1 retail; when I bid I had to base it off the ONE 2015 auction (NO retail sales that year) where it went for $30 with one bid. Which I get; it is a one-off story about Luke, Leia, and 'The Void'. For some reason it is one of the comics I most vividly remember reading as a kid. So this was more of an emotional purchase for me.

  Star Wars 39 Modern 9.2 <b><u>ISSUE #39</u></b>
Purchased 4 April, 2016 on eBay for $44.99.
2016 eBay auction average: $34.27.
2016 eBay buy it now average: $42.50.
Prices current as of 14 October, 2016.

This was my first purchase of a slabbed, vintage Marvel Star Wars book. Up until this time, I was mainly focused on building up my collection of reader copies that I have had since I was a kid and filling up the many considerable gaps in the collection. But I had ordered a Dynamic Force's Star Wars special of the day which included a slabbed comic (2015's Darth Vader #1) as part of the grab bag. I was hooked on slabs.

Luckily, I did not get too screwed in the transaction... :)

<b><u>ACTION FIGURE</u></b>
Darth Vader (<i>The Empire Strikes Back</I> Card)
Collection/Number: Vintage Collection/VC08
Release Date: 2010
Accessories: Lightsaber, 2 piece helmet
Variant: 1st Card

Not much to say about selecting the action figure for this issue. I changed the backdrop for <i>The Empire Strikes Back</i> since this is the first issue of the comics adaption. One of the things I like about this action figure is the sticker advertising the Boba Fett (more on this later) mailaway. Before the Internet, seeing the picture of the new figure (although sometimes it was a mystery) was the first glimpse we would get of a character in the next movie. This created a lot of questions since there was no other context. Who was this guy? Good or bad?

Star Wars 40 Modern 9.6 So...this is going to take some explaining. I bought this as a lot of 3 comics each graded at 9.6 for $160.00. There were 2 #40s and a #68 (which is an awesome cover with a Mandalorian on the cover...), so the price I listed is for each comic. I list both comics here and in #68 since they were purchased as a lot.

<b><u>ISSUE #40</b></u>

Purchased 29 May, 2016 on eBay for $53.34.
2016 eBay auction average: $95.71.
2016 eBay buy it now average: $136.94.
This is a highly active book. The low for the auction side is $68.00 and the high is $119.99. On the BIN side the low is $115.00 and the high is $195.00

TOTAL
$160
Total auction average value: $162.95.
Total buy it now average value: $274.94.
I got the average values by the formula: (#40*2)+#68=AV. For the auction average value for #40 I substituted 2015's average.

This is the slab that taught me patience...and to look for a metric other than what was currently on eBay. In my rush to 'collect them all'...I way overspent on this book. But I guess we all learn the hard way when starting out...

2016 eBay buy it now average: $97.00.
Prices current as of 14 October, 2016.

#42...first appearance of Boba Fett. I am a huge fan of the Fett ever since first seeing him on the 'Holiday Special' in 1977 and then getting the Kenner mail away!

But anyway; this comic is more active on the auction block than eBay's version of retail. It should be noted that there was one outlier auction where it went for $93.01 (I bid in it and lost...yay for me!) which pulled the average up from about $63-$65. On the 'retail' side, all three were best offers instead of the asking price.

It was about this time that I started learning the value of:
A) Auctions
B) gocollect.com and their comics tracker

This was a tough call. There were no auctions and this is a low activity book...so I had to go with the fixed price which was over double what this had gone for at auction. But I'm a huge Empire fan and I was trying to complete the set...

Prices current as of 14 October, 2016.

This is my first 9.8! :)

Also, it is a fairly active issue on the auction block but not many sales on the BIN side. One of the things I think is going on is a lot of sellers are equating old with rare and over pricing on the BIN. In about a year I may start selling some on eBay as I get duplicates, I think I'll set my prices as the average between the average auction price and the average BIN price.

When I started out, this is one of the books that made me nervous about getting. It is a key issue since it's the last issue. (Until the 2015 reboot/Vol II.) It's interesting to see just where we have come as a society...you see Lando smoking a cigar on the front cover. You just don't see that very often...especially on books that were aimed at a younger audience. I mean this was still the era of the Comics Code Authority!

While the artwork was always a little off from the film in this series...this cover looks really cartoon-y to me. Probably one of my least favorite covers...but it is a key issue and you can't be a completionist if you don't seek out the covers you don't like...
