Set Description
This set comprises my collection of The Walking Dead (TWD/TWDD) issue #1 comics. The comics in my set are mainly graded @9.8, with 40 Signature Series/signed, and seven graded @9.9.

TWD #1 is the iconic comic from October 2003 which started the tidal wave of TV shows, conventions, books, computer games, theme park rides, collector cards and toys. There are also big-screen movies reportedly on the way too!

This is the most-reprinted comic ever. As of May 2022, there were 267 different cover variants of this single comic in the English language - I have every single one of these in my collection. My analysis of this comic was used by Zap-Kapow Comics in their notable and much-used analysis of comics with the most variant covers - see it here.

My CGC journal is based on TWD #1. It provides a unique review of this special comic, with analysis of the two original covers and its 265 subsequent reprints, its prowess in the CGC Registry and in the re-sale market - see it here.

In addition to the single issues, TWD #1 is included in collected volumes, trade paperbacks (TPB) as well as featuring in other comics including Capes #1 and The Agents #6. There are also comics and/or TPBs produced in foreign languages for Argentina, Chile, China, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Portugal and Sweden.

Story summary: Rick and Shane are cops. Rick gets shot while on duty. He wakes up in an abandoned hospital not knowing anything of the zombie apocalypse. As he makes his way back to his house to check on his family, he runs into Morgan Jones and his son Duane. It is Duane who whacks Rick in the face with a shovel thinking that he's a zombie. When Rick comes to, he gears himself up at his old police station to continue his search for Lori, his wife and Carl, his son. He arrives in Atlanta on horse, before being surrounded by 'Walkers'.

The print run on this comic was small. Of the 7,266 said to have been printed, 3071 (42.26% on 17/6/2019) had been graded by CGC, mostly in grade 9.0 or higher. The highest graded copies on the census are at 9.9 (24 of). In March 2016, a 9.9 copy sold on eBay for a staggering $22,825. There is one copy graded at 0.5. Back in 2014, this copy sold on eBay for $756.

Special Edition (2008) Walking Dead Special Edition 1 Modern 9.8 <i>The Walking Dead Special Edition #1</i> was published in May 2008 as a celebration of the release of the 50th issue of this ground-breaking comic book series. There were less than 9500 copies. It is a special reprint edition of the first issue from October 2003, and in 16 pages of bonus materials, the comic provides the complete full script and the original series proposal. It features a wraparound cover featuring Rick surrounded by a horde of walkers.

1 Argentinian second (2011) Walking Dead 1 Signature 9.6 This is <i>The Walking Dead</i> number 1, first edition, Second Printing, Argentinian Edition. It reprints TWD numbers 1-2 in Spanish language.

This is a very nice specimen as it has been graded into the prestigious CGC Signature Series having been signed by the comic series co-creator Tony Moore in black sharpie on 27 April 2013. The signature placement is excellent, across the D, E and A of Dead, as it preserves the integrity of the cover artwork.

There are only 11 CGC-graded editions of this comic (graded between 9.2 and 9.8). This is one of two of the highest-rated in the <i>Signature Series</i>; there are x2 9.8s in the Universal label.

I purchased this book raw at the <i>Fan Air</i> comic shop in Quito, Ecuador while on return stopover from our holiday cruise in the Galapagos Islands, February 2018. I paid $25usd, and sent it to CGC for grading.

This is the extremely rare, limited edition (LE250) second printing of the Wizard World Portland 2013 exclusive edition. The purple TWD logo distinguishes it from the first printing which had a red logo.

The convention was held 22-24/2/2013 at the Oregon Convention Center.

This is one of three CGC SS copies I have of this comic. This one is signed by Arthur Suydam in black sharpie on 22/3/2013; the first day of the convention. I also have a copy of this same comic signed the same day by Sarah Wayne Callies and inscribed "LORI" (pictured). Sarah was the actor who played Rick Grimes' wife in the AMC TV show.
My third copy is a further edition signed by Arthur Suydam.

Escape (2014) Walking Dead 1 Modern 9.8 The Walking Dead Escape Edition 4/2014 with Juan Jose Ryp cover. Reprints TWD #1.

Skybound offered attendees at <i>The Walking Dead Escape</i> a new version of <i>The Walking Dead</i> #1, the 2003 Image comic book by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore that started the multimedia franchise. The tour-specific variant cover was illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp and colorist Dave Stewart, featuring Rick and Carl Grimes.

The cover was available to the first 1,000 people signed up as either a "Walker" or "Survivor" at each stop on the tour, which started in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on 24/4/2014. For those not one of the initial thousand, the comic was also on sale throughout the tour. Those who purchased VIP tickets received the black-and-white cover variant.

The tour had eight stops as below, including the final event at San Diego's Petco Park during Comic-Con International, the original home of the event two years earlier (2012).

Skybound offered attendees at <i>The Walking Dead Escape</i> a new version of <i>The Walking Dead</i> #1, the 2003 Image comic book by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore that started the multimedia franchise. The tour-specific variant cover was illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp, featuring Rick and Carl Grimes.

The standard (colour) cover was available to the first 1,000 people signed up as either a "Walker" or "Survivor" at each stop on the tour, which started in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on 24/4/2014. For those not one of the initial thousand, the comic was also on sale throughout the tour. Those who purchased VIP tickets received this black-and-white sketch cover variant.

The tour had eight stops as below, including the final event at San Diego's Petco Park during Comic-Con International, the original home of the event two years earlier (2012).

This comic is graded at 9.8 <i>Qualified</i> as the signatures were not witnessed by CGC. The autographs were collected by Jonathan Zahos who was a guest host at <i>The Walking Dead Escape</i> events noted below, who sold it directly to me. I sent it to CGC for grading.

<u>Comic summary</u>:

Skybound offered attendees at <i>The Walking Dead Escape</i> a new version of <i>The Walking Dead</i> #1, the 2003 Image comic book by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore that started the multimedia franchise. For identification of this variant, the Hyundai logo shows on the back cover. I also have the original envelope, letter and other materials sent by Hyundai by post to Acupuncture Center, 6232 Bankers Road, Mount Pleasant, WI who were the first owners of one of the LE1000 new <i>TWD Special Edition Tucson</i> cars.

CGC census 1/2021: 35. 4 @9.4. 27 higher, including 14 @9.8 and 1 @9.9.
There are 25 graded Universal and 10 graded into <i>Signature Series</i>.
