Owner's Description

Amazing Spider-Man #343 features the 1st appearance of Cardiac in cameo on last page!

Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $8.

According to the CGC Census Report as of Tuesday, August 22, 2023, out of a total of 265 Universal copies graded, 135 copies were graded in 9.8 with ONLY 1 copy graded higher in 9.9!

With these statistics in mind, this represents a rarity factor of 50.94% of the total population.

To kick-off the new year in January of 1991, writer David Michelinie and artist Erik Larsen combined their creative forces and introduced us to Cardiac, who would become a new vigilante anti-hero birthed within the Amazing Spider-Man title!

Although he 1st appeared in the previous issue as Dr. Elias Wirtham; a physician and surgeon who also owns a biological research firm, he wouldn’t make his 1st full appearance as Cardiac until the following issue—in Amazing Spider-Man #344, in which he also makes his 1st cover appearance!

The backstory is that Elias was motivated by the untimely death of his brother Joshua, who could have still been alive if it weren’t for a greedy corporation withholding back the medicine due to it not being a profitable time to release it. Therefore, he performed a surgery on himself in which he replaced his own heart with a beta-particle reactor, which supplies energy throughout his body! He also added a vibranium weave mesh under his skin, which provided him with superhuman physical abilities as well as being able to channel intense energy that can be fired through his fists or his staff! Since his powers are generated through his upgraded heart, he adopted the name “Cardiac” and became a vigilante against corporate greed!

In terms of the cover art by Erik Larsen & Randy Emberlin—it’s an absolute stunner! We have a myriad of characters featured, which includes Spider-Man, Tarantula, Scorpion, Black Cat and the Femme Fatales, who just made their debut appearance three issues previously—in Amazing Spider-Man #340! In addition, the bright gold and yellow background pops nicely with the deep red, black and blue colors along with the white ASM title. Furthermore, with Spidey surrounded by a total of 7 adversaries, it was fitting to include the caption: BUT LOOK HOW MANY MO’ FOES HE’S GOTTA FIGHT!

Moreover, maybe one day we’ll get a chance to see Cardiac’s character come alive on the silver screen? If that ever happens, ASM #343 will go from insignificant to in demand overnight!

Although ASM #343 is far from being rare, as there are more 9.8 copies on the CGC Census than any other grade, this particular 9.8 copy is exceptional because it is PERFECTLY WRAPPED and CENTERED and contains PERFECT WHITE PAGES!

In addition, the staple placement is excellent, the book is perfectly cut and the color saturation is deep and bright!

In closing, I purchased this pristine beauty from Metropolis Collectibles (Comic Connect) in April of 2021! The transaction and communication went extremely well and I’m proud to showcase this immaculate copy in Arachnophobia!

Happy Collecting & Enjoy the Hunt!
