Favorite line and some thoughts:
"Flatterer."
-Gudrun, wife of Volstagg.
Story-wise, not the most remarkable issue for the penultimate pencilling effort of Walt's run. I think it fair to say that he had shifted his energies to X-Factor at this point. The inking for Thor 367 was done by committee and visually the product as a whole feels a bit rushed. That said, I remain a big fan of the cover and like how certain seeds are planted here that bear fruit by the end of the run. These include Thor's new beard, grown to hide the scars he got from Hela. "After all these years, I begin to resemble the storied thunder god of earthly legend," Thor considers. Indeed, beginning here and throughout the final issues of his run, Walt brought Thor's appearance bit by bit closer to a medieval warlord than a body builder in colorful tights and cape. He did this, I suspect, to bolster the visual-mythological sensibilities of Thor's impending encounter with the world serpent (see Thor 380). Note that the little figure of Thor holding aloft Mjolnir in the trade dress box is now bearded, too.
A whole lotta love here. Karnilla and Balder are hot and heavy after the successful conclusion of Balder's adventures in Jotunheim. The Thor-Sif-Bill triangle resumes, and though Thor is at last repentant for his treatment of Sif in issue 359 and she willing to forgive him it is is too late...she's ready to split with Bill again. Heimdall digs Amora but she's busy being Amora. Lorelei is desperate to win Loki's affections, so much so that she is duped by Malekith (again). The prize for this issue's most prodigious couple goes to Volstagg and Gudrun, arm in arm, leading their brood to the coronation of Balder. I'm not certain, but this may be the first appearance of Gudrun. We learn that she is a perfect match for Volstagg. A truly inventive and necessary use of the splash page by Walt, then. Gudrun's one-word response to her husband is her only line in the book, but it's wonderful.
