Famous Crimes #1 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on page 234.
Commenting on the depiction of women in comics, Wertham states “In no other literature for children has the image of womanhood been so degraded. Where in any other childhood literature except children’s comics do you find a woman called (and treated as) a “fat slut”?
The “fat slut” quote comes from the story “Clara Peete, the Beautiful Beast” contained in Famous Crimes #1. In the story, Clara, a hard-core criminal, does indeed refer to her landlady as a fat slut. In addition to Famous Crimes #1, this story originally appeared in Phantom Lady #16 so both books are considered SOTI references.
