Owner's Description
Issue #48 is an 80-Page Giant and has thus always commands a premium over regular JLA issues. It contains reprints from Brave and Bold #29, JLA #2 and JLA #3. There are two 9.8s atop the census, the Pacific Coast copy and the Fantucchio copy, which we now own. The PC copy recently sold on Heritage for $9,000. While we might ideally prefer the PC Pedigree, the best of the Fantucchios have amazing inks, a characteristic that our copy shares. Fantucchio was a well-known artist in '60s fandom, drawing covers for RBCC and the Comic Buyers Guide (including the #1 cover), and even worked as an illustrator for the CIA from 1963 to 1988. During this time he amassed full runs of Marvel, DC, Gold Key, Charlton, ACG and Dell, among others, keeping them locked away and untouched, which resulted in uniformly high grades and near perfect cover inks. After his passing in 2016, the family auctioned the collection through Comiclink. Even though the books have no distinctive markings, many were CGC graded.
We acquired our book from a friend and fellow collector in a private transaction in May 2020.
2022 Update: the PC copy came up for auction again on CL in March 2022 and only made $6,377, showing once again that any appreciation in JLAs is apparently limited to a few keys. We contemplated making a run at it, but it has OW pages and, after looking it over again, I honestly believe our book is the far nicer of the two, despite my usual preference for Pacific Coast pedigrees.
