Jeff Smith cover, story, and art
*“Death” of Lord Tarsil*

Synopsis
Thorn’s dream about the night her parents are killed fills in a few holes from the narrative but it’s still not complete. When Thorn wakes up, she finds herself in a dungeon with Fone with both having lost a tooth in their fight with Tarsil’s soldiers. Meanwhile, Gran’ma Ben watches from the ramparts while Briar and the rat creatures surround the city. Lord Tarsil won’t surrender and is promptly cut in half by Briar. Ben immediately takes over as the rat creatures attempt to storm the walls.

The Slab
Second highest grade! I bought this on eBay from the massive rolo40 collection, which comprised about 80% of Bone slabs on the CGC census between 2007 and 2010. I actually met him in person to pick up a larger order of mine in the late 2000s. This example was graded on September 26, 2007.

Inside The Comic
Twenty-six pages of story, zero pages of letters, and six pages of ads. The inside front cover has a drawing of beat up Fone Bone and Thorn from page 14 with the black & white “coloring” reversed. The brief prologue is on the top left and the credits are as follows: Written and Drawn by Jeff Smith, Cover Color by Steve Hamaker. For Cartoon Books: Vijaya Iyer as Publisher and Kathleen Glosan as Production Manager. The back cover features a panel from page 1 showing rat creatures on the chase.

The custom in the 90s and 2000s for any kind of anniversary or number divisible by 25 was a cover enhancement of some sort. Bone #50 was no exception and this was the only time something like this occurred in the regular series. The Bone titling is a shiny red foil which does look impressive against a black background. The numbering, date, and cover price appear on the back cover but Jeff Smith’s name is only on the interior.

Ads
Like the last two issues, there are no Bone-a-Fides. The first ad page shows the cover for #51 with the words “Repent. The End is Near”. The next three ads are for independent comics: Shuck Comics by Rick Smith, the same ad from #49 for three comics from publisher Alternative Comics, and Fish N Chips by Bone colorist Steve Hamaker. The fifth ad is for Bone Volume 8: Treasure Hunters with the caption “In Phoney We Trust” (available in comic shops everywhere and on the web at Boneville.com).

The final ad page is for the Rose collected edition which had the same art as the ad in #46 & #47 with slightly different text. The inside back cover showed all the covers of the Bone collected editions along with Rose and Stupid, Stupid Rat Tails. It also displayed a few of the hardbacks between the Fone Bone & Rat Creature book ends. Again, available in comic shops everywhere and Boneville.com.

Estimated Copies Sold thru Diamond: 17200

Back Cover Collectible
Bone #50 CGC 9.4 SS

This is probably the best example of #50 that I’ve ever seen in person in terms of structure and lack of spine ticks. I bought it raw from paperheart but it wasn’t pressed as well as it could have been. At the moment, CGC doesn’t allow pressers other than their own to work on Signature Series and keep their pure yellow label. They’ve had this policy for a while now but I hope they go back to their old ways so books such as this can get the spot pressing they need. I just have to wait…

Facilitated by the great Rich Henn and signed at the 2023 Heroes Con (graded 9/21/23).
