Thank you to Iconic1s for hooking me up with this piece. Superman: The Man of Steel #22 was one of (and maybe the very first) "Reign of the Supermen" issues I found and read when I started collecting these books in 1994. Even as an 11-year-old I admired the complexity of John Henry Irons, a.k.a. The Man of [Steel], a former engineer who retreated to a new life in construction after the energy technology he helped to create became used as a weapon. Irons felt indebted to Superman, who saved his life after a fall from a construction site. When Irons told Superman that he owed him his life, Superman's response was to "make it count for something."

Story continued in Adventures of Superman #501 (6/93).
