Owner's Description
I love the cover on Ann 1 with a reprint of Superboy 69 "How Superboy learned to fly" (via balloon training!). The Annual is a great example of the 1964 DC revolutionary approach to the Giant 25 cent comic.
Besides Superman and Batman, only Flash (1963) Lois (1 & 2 in '62 and '63) and this Superboy issue tried 25 cent comics with reprints. They were not huge successes, so other Giant annuals were scrapped (see the back cover of the Superboy annual 1-it has an ad for stories about to resprinted in what was TOUTED as Jimmy Olsen Annual 1-it never came out. Instead it came out as 80 Pg Giant #2, a series of 15 Giants which took all my 25 cents allowance at age 8-9 to acquire.
These 80 Pg Giants were so successful as a series that instead of an annual event, by early 1965, it became a frenzy of giants! DC started sprinkling 80 Pg Giants within each series, several times a year per title.
So Superboy lasted as a series for 30 years, yet only had 1 Annual. But 80 Pg Giants, 100 Pg Super Spectaculars, etc--?? PLENTY!
