To kick off the new year in January of 1986, writer Tom DeFalco and artist Sal Buscema combined their creative forces and introduced us to Mr. Jalome Beacher, who would become another addition to Spider-Man’s world class rogues’ gallery!

Jalome Beacher was a talented chemical engineer who was employed by Beemont Manufacturing and worked in the research and development laboratory. During this time, he designed a special non-stick formula that could be applied to anything and eliminate all friction between that object and the surfaces it contacted.

Feeling confident in creating his new state of the art technology, Jalome’s enthusiasm in sharing his discovery was quickly repressed after he learned that Beemont Manufacturing was purchased from a larger corporation and a strange man named Rockwall was placed in charge. To add salt to the wound, the research and development lab was immediately closed, and Beacher was fired!

After feeling rejected and having counted his losses, Jalome decided to create his own company based on his classified non-stick coating. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful in his attempts because he was not financially capable of placing a sufficient down payment, in order to receive the bank loan needed to start the company.

At this point, Jalome became desperate and applied his non-stick formula on a special uniform he created, which allowed him to move at superhuman speeds by sliding on his feet! His suit would repel any type of adhesive substance; therefore, Spider-Man’s webbing was ineffective on him. In addition, the all-white suit included pads on the gloves so that he could easily grip objects without them slipping from his grasp.

With his newly found technological abilities, he adopted the name Slyde and began his criminal career by robbing the banks who denied him a loan! He also successfully broke into Beemont Manufacturing where he destroyed his old laboratory and snatched a briefcase from Mr. Rockwall’s hand!

Within the briefcase, Slyde found documentation that Beemont Manufacturing was used as a front to distribute stolen money from a criminal organization. Slyde contacted the New York District Attorney to set up a sting operation against Mr. Rockwall.

After confirming the meeting with Rockwall to exchange the information in the briefcase for cash, Slyde had other plans to take off with the ransom money provided to him by the police department. In contrast, Mr. Rockwall also had planned to have Slyde killed by a group of thugs he hired.

Fortunately, Spider-Man learned of Rockwall’s plan to murder Slyde without knowing about the police being involved, so he arrived at the meeting location just in time to warn Slyde of Rockwall’s intent. Spider-Man proceeded to capture Mr. Rockwall and while that was happening, Slyde quickly grabbed the ransom money and left the scene without anyone able to catch him!

On that note, cover artists Mr. Ron Frenz & Joe Rubinstein captured Slyde’s quick speed and maneuverability, as he is depicted escaping both Spider-Man and the NYPD! In the middle, a large comic dialogue bubble reads: THINK YOU’VE GOT ME, EH, WEBHEAD? WELL…, which is followed by a bottom panel scene displaying Spider-Man tripped over in a pile of trash bags with Slyde in the far background exclaiming…MAKE WAY FOR…SLYDE!

Maybe one day we’ll get a chance to see Slyde’s character come alive on the silver screen? If that ever happens, ASM #272 will go from insignificant to in demand overnight!

Although ASM #272 is far from being rare, as there are more 9.8 copies on the CGC Census than all of the other grades combined, this particular 9.8 copy is exceptional because it is PERFECTLY WRAPPED and CENTERED and contains PERFECT WHITE PAGES!

In closing, I purchased this pristine beauty from fijidj (via eBay) in December of 2020! The transaction and communication went extremely well, and it was a nice addition to Arachnophobia!

Happy Collecting & Enjoy the Hunt!
