Owner's Description

The JLA tangles with its robot counterparts in Issue #13 in “The Riddle of the Robot Justice League!" In the story, while out on various solo adventures, the members of the Justice League are all transported to a distant planet by Sforll who has collected them to stop Zedd Brann. Brann is an alien from the planet Skarn whose people have devised a device which will drain the life force of entire universes. If they succeed in draining the universe of the Justice League, they will bring about the destruction of the Earth. When Sforll's original champion tried to stop the Skarns and their plot, he became the victim of their device that creates robot duplicates of the Skarns' foes.

The Justice League agreed to help Sforll and travel to Skarn to challenge them and foil their plot to destroy the universe. They end up in the battle arena fighting robot duplicates of themselves. With Aquaman as adviser, each JLA member is able to defeat their robot. However, even though they are victorious they still haven't found the device that is draining the life-force of the universe. Realizing that it is in the very arena they battle in, the JLA destroy the device and then Green Lantern uses his power ring to seal the planet off so that if they build a similar device in the future it is useless.

I originally bought the single highest graded copy of this issue, which was a WP 9.6, from Greg Reece about four years ago. Unfortunately, that copy quickly lost that distinction and was soon joined by two other 9.6s. Then in late 2020, a 9.8 appeared in the hands of a dealer from Canada, who I understand bought it raw as part of an entire JLA run. I believe this turned out to be the only 9.8 in that collection. I eventually bought the book in a private transaction in January 2021. As of this writing, it is the only 9.8 and the single highest graded copy of this issue. Hopefully, it will retain that honor longer than our 9.6 copy of this issue did. At the very least, it is highly unlikely that it will ever be surpassed.
