Owner's Description

Daredevil #43 features Daredevil’s origin partially retold and a CLASSIC Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott cover!

Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $245.

According to the CGC Census Report as of Tuesday, August 22, 2023, out of a total of 930 Universal copies graded, only 100 copies were graded in 9.4 with only 67 copies graded higher: 51 in 9.6 and 16 in 9.8!

With these statistics in mind, this represents an impressive rarity factor of only 10.75% of the total population!
___________________________________________________________

Published in August of 1968, legendary artists Jack Kirby (penciller) and Joe Sinnott (inker) drew a classic Captain America Vs. Daredevil battle cover!

Displayed against a jet-black background, which make high grade copies super difficult to locate, we see Daredevil slipping a ferocious hook punch thrown by Captain America in the middle of a boxing ring! This set the visual tone to reflect Stan Lee’s partial retelling of Daredevil’s origin!

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: Matt Murdock’s father, Jack, was a boxer who was paid by a corrupt boxing promoter (Roscoe Sweeney) to purposely lose a fight to Carl Creel. However, Jack decided not to adhere to the “game plan” and won the fight! After taking in the satisfaction of the crowd’s cheers for once, he then fled the arena with his son Matt to go home because he knew Sweeney would be after him!

After arriving at their home and Matt was safe inside the building, Sweeney and his henchmen shot Jack Murdock and left him dead in an alley! Matt heard the shots and ran outside to sadly find his father dead in his arms! This led Daredevil to seek JUSTICE by becoming a lawyer and evolving into the crime-fighting vigilante we know as Daredevil!

With all that said, when we see the imagery of Daredevil fighting inside the boxing ring, it has deep implications to Matt Murdock’s origin and purpose! Therefore, this spectacular cover is a certified CLASSIC, as it has been paid homage to many times over!

For example, artists Ron Frenz & Al Milgrom paid tribute to Jack Kirby’s masterpiece on the cover of Captain America #341, published in May of 1988!

Silver Age Daredevil books (especially the 1st appearance issues) are still extremely undervalued in the current marketplace, so it would not be a bad idea to invest in high grade copies NOW, while they are still very affordable!

In closing, I purchased this PERFECTLY WRAPPED & CENTERED copy from Pedigree Comics’ Grand Auction in March of 2022! I am super proud to own this immaculate copy and look forward to watching it appreciate each year!

Happy Collecting & Enjoy the Hunt!
