Owner's Description

Daredevil #42 features the origin and 1st appearance of the Jester + a full-page ad for Silver Surfer #1!

Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $105.

According to the CGC Census Report as of Tuesday, August 22, 2023, out of a total of 368 Universal copies graded, only 73 copies were graded in 9.4 with only 55 copies graded higher: 39 in 9.6 and 16 in 9.8!

With these statistics in mind, this represents a rarity factor of 19.84% of the total population.
___________________________________________________________

Published in July of 1968, Gene Colan (penciller) & Dan Adkins (inker) introduced us to a new original Daredevil villain—the Jester!

Although Jester AKA Jonathan Powers has no superhuman powers, he is a skilled athlete, acrobat and fencer and often uses comical gimmicky toy devices to execute his crimes and distract, manipulate, and attack his opponents!

Like several other characters throughout the Marvel Universe such as Venom, the Scorpion, and the Hobgoblin to name a few, there would be multiple characters (i.e., Jody Putt) who would take on the Jester identity throughout the years.

However, nothing beats the original and what a beautiful first appearance battle cover we have here! The Jester is throwing a projectile into Daredevil’s head after what appears of him tripping over a wagon full of building blocks with a jack-in-the-box, a tricycle, a toy robot, playing cards and marbles scattered throughout the scene! It is reminiscent of the Joker in DC comics, as he also used similar toy gimmicks to service his burglaries and to attack anyone who got in his way!

Furthermore, the white background really brings out the red, green, and purple colors and makes the cover POP!

“NOBODY LAUGHS AT…THE JESTER!”

Silver Age Daredevil books (especially the 1st appearance issues) are still extremely undervalued in the current marketplace, so it would not be a bad idea to invest in high grade copies NOW, while they are still very affordable!

In closing, I purchased this PERFECTLY WRAPPED & CENTERED copy from Comic Link’s Focused Auction in March of 2022! I am super proud to own this immaculate copy and look forward to watching it appreciate each year!

Happy Collecting & Enjoy the Hunt!
