Issue #23 introduces the Queen Bee, Zazzala The leader of the hive world, Kroll. She is endowed with super-human strength and speed, along with an array of venomous darts. She also has the power to release mind confusing pollen powder. Her prime mission in life is the interstellar expansion of her species. She becomes a frequent JLA foe throughout the 60s and 70s.
In "Drones of the Queen Bee,” the JLA is called to stop a group of bee-men who are robbing the Tower of Jewels, the Capitol museum, and the National Library. While attempting to stop their opponents, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Flash and Martian Manhunter are taken under the control of the bee-men's leader, Zazzala. She forces them to travel to an unexplored world in her home solar system to collect three different chemicals, which will form an elixir to make her immortal, promising to let the JLA free if they do her bidding.
Agreeing to do so, the heroes do succeed in fighting past the various traps set to defend the chemicals and bring them to Zazzala. As part of her bargain she lets them free, boasting that once she has reached immortality she can destroy them at her leisure. However, the JLA had tricked her by sealing the chemicals in indestructible bottles that she cannot open, foiling her plans.
The pictured copy is one of two 9.8s and comes from the Pacific Coast Collection. We acquired it in the October 2018 Pedigree Comics Auction. As of this writing, we own both 9.8s. I think the other one may actually be the nicer copy, but this one has the pedigree.
