Owner's Description

Daredevil #164 features Daredevil’s origin story retold!

Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $45.

According to the CGC Census Report as of Tuesday, August 22, 2023, out of a total of 400 Universal copies graded, only 79 copies were graded in 9.8 with 0 copies graded higher!

With these statistics in mind, this represents a rarity factor of 19.75% of the total population.

However, this is the much RARER Newsstand Edition Variant, which means that you can estimate that ONLY 2-4% of all 9.8s are Newsstand Edition copies!
___________________________________________________________

Published in May of 1980, Daredevil #164 features a stunning Frank Miller and Wally Wood cover that reflects the powerful imagery of Daredevil’s origin story!

Displayed against a jet-black background, which make NM/M 9.8 copies super difficult to locate, we see Daredevil holding his dead father in his arms while standing in the middle of a boxing ring…with a bold caption that screams: “…AND HE CRIES…FATHER!”

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: Matt Murdock’s father, Jack, was a boxer who was paid by a corrupt boxing promoter (Roscoe Sweeney) to purposely lose a fight to Carl Creel. However, Jack decided not to adhere to the “game plan” and won the fight! After taking in the satisfaction of the crowd’s cheers for once, he then fled the arena with his son Matt to go home because he knew Sweeney would be after him!

After arriving at their home and Matt was safe inside the building, Sweeney and his henchmen shot Jack Murdock and left him dead in an alley! Matt heard the shots and ran outside to sadly find his father dead in his arms! This led Daredevil to seek JUSTICE by becoming a lawyer and evolving into the crime-fighting vigilante we know as Daredevil!

With all that said, when we see the imagery of Daredevil standing inside the boxing ring, it has deep implications to Matt Murdock’s origin and purpose! Therefore, this spectacular cover can be considered one of Frank Miller’s most significant throughout his legendary Daredevil run!

Furthermore, although it is not noted on the CGC label, Daredevil #164 is also a very special book because it features the legendary Wally Wood’s last work for Marvel Comics!

In closing, I purchased this PERFECTLY WRAPPED & CENTERED Newsstand Edition Variant copy from Heritage Auctions in February of 2023! I am super proud to own this immaculate copy and look forward to watching it appreciate each year!

Happy Collecting & Enjoy the Hunt!
