Owner's Description
In the Spring, Ben Reilly returns from raiding a Beyond safe house with the tech hidden within it. A reticent Janine asks if he intends to follow through with his plan, and Ben is fixated on revenge, still blaming Peter for losing everything he had. However, Janine questions how this plan will restore his lost memories and where it will end, with Ben informing her that all of his formative memories are lost and the only ones remaining are the ones Beyond left him and the painful ones of people telling him he is a clone and he's not real. But through the pain, Ben begins to piece clues from fragmented memories leading to Project Purgatory, a secret military skunkworks project that ended before concluding. As he needs more time to complete what it's missing, Janine resigns herself to leave him to it. She heads to Grand Central Station to have breakfast and is met by Gerry trying to cheer her up, only to deduce from a waitress that he's a bounty hunter. He admits he recognized her and tells her that Janine Godbe escaped prison some months back so she snaps his leg and stabs his hand with a fork to escape. She returns home to Ben and confesses her feelings of being hurt by the world, resolving herself to aid Ben's mission and make him whole again.
In the Summer, despite being an important day for his plans, Ben stalks Peter's empty apartment building hoping to see him, yet knowing he won't show. Bitter that Peter never liked it when Ben showed initiative but is gallivanting with Norman Osborn to save Mary Jane, the love of his life. As he contemplates, he's approached by a debt collector looking for Peter and calls Ben out, thinking him to be Peter, as he's called everyone who knows Peter, but they didn't know his whereabouts. Uninterested in their talk, Ben returns to Janine, where he provides a skin sample, much to her dissatisfaction, as it serves as the machine's ignition source. While Janine is uncertain about letting him go through the portal as they don't know what's on the other side, Ben states that it feels right the closer he gets, akin to going home, so Janine helps him through, and he arrives in Limbo meeting Goblin Queen (Madelyne Pryor). Bonding over how the surrounding demons insult them for being clones, they start a dialogue. When the monsters stop insulting and start socializing, they slaughter each other as Madelyne finds that they bring each other relative peace in their company, asking for his name and purpose. Identifying as "Chasm," he elaborates that that's all that's left inside him as the man he was cloned from "stole" their shared memories and was aimless until Limbo started pulling him. Madelyne expresses that Limbo knows her well and draws people who understand the pain they share in common, and she wants her realm to be a sanctuary for them as she continues to talk with him about what they can do for each other.
In the Fall, Madelyne happily houses Ben and Janine while inviting them to stay as long as they wish. Still, while having enjoyed their recent mischievous excursions to Earth, Madelyne can't really help Ben plan an attack on New York City given certain political factors with her, so Ben proposes that he lead such an event while she takes what she wants. She asks what he thinks she wants, given she's Queen of Limbo, so Ben answers that they had their lives taken and they know where the "thieves" live. Ben argues that they know what they want and where to get whom, but as her kingdom was given to her, she hesitates to bite the hand that fed her. Later, Madylene meets Janine outside on the veranda, apologizing if the dinner pageantry misled her to think she was eyeing Ben. Still, Janine isn't worried given their past and answers Madylene's curiosity that she's upset at being helpless. Madelyne admits she liked Janine, relating to the shared sense of helplessness, wanting to shape her destiny and not continue as a perpetual victim. Presenting a finger tribute from the Bastard-Demon S'ym, it can be used to help Janine as S'ym did for Madelyne, but only if Janine asked for it. Janine consents, so Madelyne plunges the demon's finger into her chest, recites her many aliases, and with a spell conjures many masks. A mask to curse them, a mask to bleed them, and a mask to splinter bone. As she was called a monster and made to wear many faces all her life, she will now have the power to be just that but on her terms, with this new power as her own, and is reborn as Hallows' Eve.
In the Winter, Ben stands in the snow once more stalking Peter's residence, seeing how he's living "his" life before he takes it, and is ambushed by the debt collector seeking to collect Peter's debts from "Peter." Gus tells Ben that after talking to everyone he knows, he would think that Peter was a good guy falling on hard times, but concludes from Ben's interactions that "Peter" is a deadbeat. He mockingly asks how it feels to be a fake, sending Ben into a rage and beating him to a pulp, a great end to his day. Ben takes the battered man with him to Madelyne, looking to test the fruits of a tree she's been growing, and Chasm presents Gus, the debt collector, whom Madelyne alludes to knowing is a serial killer. She presents a fruit from her Tree of Exquisite Liberation, telling him to eat it and he can go free. A scared Gus complies and eats the fruit, only to immediately kill him and have his soul leave his body, and Madelyne explains that inhaling the know would allow her to know all of him. Testing the action, Madelyne inhales and knows how evil a man Gus was, finalizing Ben's plan to become whole again. Madelyne now has the chance to test her theory as to whether or not she was granted a kingdom or put away to let Jean Grey and she grants her army to Chasm. A thankful Ben accepts and offers tribute in the treasure that Hallows' Eve will bring her. Chasm then swears that he will have Spider-Man eat the fruit to take all of him, as Peter Parker's soul belongs to him.
